I find it so embarrassing! I finally bought some home gym equipment. Anyone else find it hard to work out in front of people?

yeh me too, but only when it comes to the thought of walking into a gym and with everything on show and exposed. i haven't really attempted to try so i cant really judge, i can play basketball infront of crowds but a gym i always imagine these supermodels and buff people everywhere so its sort of an intimidating envrionment, most people go about their business and keep to themselves but there are also cliques who work out together and talk to each other .....i also think it depends on the gym, some smaller gyms arn't clogged with people all the time.

i own an excercise bike and some weights which i use a fair bit, i'd prefer a home gym as well for now and then once im ready i'd join a proper gym.

basketball is the only thing keeping me fit, i practice three times a week for an hour until dark then competition one night per week. i actually ended up practicing every night for two years so my skills are quite developed, i used to practice so much because i felt that nothing was going right for me in other areas so i needed alot of me time to outweigh the negatives, so basketball, walking, going to the cinema alot helped me through a rough patch.

Definetly!! All those people just staring and looking at me would not make me able to work out. Luckily, I have like a full work out gym in the upstairs part of my garage so I never have to go to a public gym and I can crank up the music really loud :p.

Yep. I feel like people are watching me every second I'm in the gym. Luckily my local gym is in a very small town and 80% of the time I'm the only person in there (I've learned the times of day when it's quiet.)

other than my home, my second home is the gym. i've worked out pretty hard there for around 2 and a half years, i joined on my 16th birthday. it's a comfort zone for me (agoraphobia sufferer). i've met tonnes of good people there and have loads of friends every time i go in, in the evenings.

as a guy thats keenly into fitness, i know it's so much easier said than done, but try not to worry. people at the gym aren't interested in what kind of shape you're in. they won't judge you, people who embrase the lifestyle i do are much more keen about getting people to join our lifestyle. whether it be bodybuilding, weight loss, etc. we'd much rather have you onboard and with us, trust me, this is 95% of people i know. tonnes of them would love the opportunity to help others.

i'm one of these people, although i'm only 18 i've very knowledgable in this field, i'd love the chance to help anybody out with regards to fitness questions, so feel free to message me or ask in this thread :).

one step at a time... maybe go for 20 minutes one day, then go again for another 20 minutes, maybe up it to 30 and see how you feel. if you don't want to talk to people that's fair enough, it's a place where a lot of people don't like socialising, they go there to work out. people respect those who work hard, just bring an ipod and you won't be disturbed.

hope i maybe helped in some way as to how the average gym go-er thinks. if you're female and a few people look at you, there's a very strong chance they find you attractive ::eek:: after all, i'd love to find a nice girl that's into fitness, it's a huge turn on :)

I've wanted to go to a gym for years, but have always worried about pretty much everything about going there, from getting my membership in the first place, to going there when it is busy and having everyone watch me. However, i'm living with a friend next year who goes to the gym all the time, so i'm going to join up then, and hopefully it won't all be as bad as i worry it will be!

I used to find it hard, but then I found out that people at the gym mostly minded their own business.

I've personally never been to a gym because I can't go alone, I've been scared that people would stare at me... I'd like to go though, just to get a bit more fit and healthy. If I were to go with someone maybe it would be possible. For now, I just do little exercises at home.

That's the key people need to tell themselves, and what CBT tried to drill into my head. Joining terrified me because I wouldn't know what to do and I'd look like a weak little idiot, lifting weights like woman, all while people laugh behind my back. But a nice staff member showed me how to use 4 machines and gave me a little program to follow to get me started, and the other people really couldn't care less, they're so into themselves listening to their iPods or staring at a mirror.

In the end I gave up after a month though, not because of the SA aspects, but from lack of motivation probably related to depression. I couldn't bring myself to do the same thing for another month with not much to show for it - but that's how almost everything in my life is at the moment.

I used to feel really self conscious at the gym, but nowadays it sort of works as a motivator as i'd rather do something than have people looking at me standing around. I've broken so many pain barriers at the gym :p Besides, you're around people and there's always a chance, slim as it might be, of meeting some nice person to have (awkward) chats with lol...

I do feel a lil uncomfortable at times, but usually its fun and exciting for me!!! I'm actually in pretty good shape nd i know a lot of cool and innovative workouts so ppl actually ask me for advice and to show them new workouts. I actually feel more confident in a gym then most places!!! :)

i'm very happy for you mate, as i feel the same. people compliment you on how you've changed since school, which i left 2 years ago, meet people with the same interests, get speaking to people comfortably. for me it's the main place other than my home that i feel truely comfortable and myself at. a second home for the past 2 and a half years haha.

It would depend on the gym. I am not much of a gym person (even though I like to workout) mainly because I don't believe in paying for the gym, I hate when my equipment is in use, I hate the music or television they sometimes have on.

When I was at school, there was a small, intimate gym that I enjoyed. It was free. The machines were awesome and easy to use, and it was mostly women (some men, but not many.) The only downfall was when someone was watching MTV and Gilmore Girls on the TV.

I don't have a problem working out in front of others, and I like how I look in gym clothes (woah, a rare compliment to myself). The only thing that worries me is not knowing how to work the more difficult machine and looking like a fool trying to! And if there are too many guys there, I might feel nervous. And I tend to compare myself to the other women there. But the big thing, is not knowing how to use a machine for me.
