Why children and teens smoke

Addiction in general is relative from person to person.

thanks for the backup, heh.. it is relative from person to person, it may very well be harder than heroin to put down for YOU, and i know plenty of other people as well, half the fukking world, maybe.. but it's just not that way for me.. forgive me for being able to put a cigarette down if i want to..

I was the same for some reason. I smoked everyday for 5 years, then decided to stop. I never picked up or wanted one again. I can't explain it but if I'm honest I didn't feel addicted.

Smoking is gross. I grew up with my parents smoking nonstop 24/7, while my mom was pregnant she smoked, when she gave birth to me she smoked, every minute of her life she smoked right next to me. In my room, in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in the living room, in the car. 5 packs a day minimum. Needless to say I developed a lot of lung problems in my childhood, multiple counts of pneumonia, bronchitis and even tuberculosis once. My sister had a lot of the same problems, and now she still suffers from weak lungs and chronic sinusitis. Me and my sister grew up detesting cigarettes and you couldn't pay us to smoke lol. My parents still smoke but I managed to get it through their thick skulls to do it outside.

I have nothing against smokers I just can't breathe it. Makes me feel like I'm having asthma attacks. If you don't smoke now, the best advice I can give you is never to try it. You could get as addicted as my parents were and almost kill your children.

A bit defensive there, alot of people do smoke casualy like when they just drink,or people who smoke it with weed :D I cant speak for anyone but myself but I dont think anyone said it "isnt relative" :).Nicotinie is addictive fact,More addictive than heroin fact, but if that doesnt affect you guys thats great and your obviously doing somthing right,or being carefull enough not to let it get a grip.

Yes we all handle different addictions differently, people have different tolerance leves ect I know people who have smoked heroin and not got addicted on and off for years.Still I wouldnt advise it ;)

And Endymion, heroin could be one of the safest drugs on the planet..apart from its sheer addictiveness and overdose risk when you inject. It actualy has very few side affects. But of course once you are addcited,it is a horrible addiction and you can die from injecting it just because you didnt realise it was 5% stronger today. The media might embelish, but that doesnt mean there is no truth to it.:)

And tolerance can take a while to build up especialy if you only smoke it,you pretty much have to smoke it on a daily basis,Im sure there have been people who got addicted quicker, and I know people who have gone deeper and just stopped.Injecting is when the real habit starts, your tolerance goes up so quick.

Well thats funny either you dont find them addictive, Because smokes are harder to give up then Herion.

I'm not going to say that smoking is not addictive but I didn't have a problem quitting cold turkey. I'll never understand why people find it so difficult to quit. I had my first cigarette at about thirteen and smoked until I was twenty one. By the time I was fifteen years old, I was a heavy smoker. There were times when I could smoke a 25 pack in a day. I suppose that eight years is not that long of a time to be smoking so it wasn't difficult for me to quit. Now, I only smoke when I go out drinking and this happens every two or three weeks.

When I found out that I was pregnant, I quit right away. I had no withdrawl or any cravings. My other friend as well as many other women, still smoked during their pregnancy. A doctor once told my friend that it was okay if she smoked while she was pregnant.

I'm not an anti-smoker but I would never tell a pregnant woman that it should be okay to smoke. I've been told that it is worse for your baby if you quit cold turkey but my child was in perfect health throughout gestation, post-partum and beyond. I've heard quite a few women who have smoked during their pregnancy who have told other women that stressing about quitting smoking is worse for pregnancy than smoking itself.

Now I won't judge them but just because another woman says that all her kids were born healthy despite her smoking, doesn't mean that smoking will not cause birth defects or other health problems in someone else's baby.

One friend cut down smoking when she found out that her baby's chest was underdeveloped. The boy is okay now, thankfully.

Now, I only smoke when I go out drinking and this happens every two or three weeks.

I guess alot of addiction is in the mind, relative like poeple have already said.Maybe it depends on the amount of willpower someone has.Where with heroin you will be ill for a couple of months unless you go onto a substitue.I think the battle with the addiction of nicotine is the actual quitting itself.

Having the willpower to really want to stop and see it through is most of the battle.@Serafina,maybe quitting would never been an issue for you anyway as you come across quite strong willed, but maybe finding out you were pregnant gave you alot of willpower, where it wasnt even a choice when it came to your babies health?

Sorry for taking the subject off topic a bit,I just finding addiction intresting having struggled with it when I was younger.

I know of plenty of heroin users that have had no addiction problems, they've used it more than just a couple of times then they stop.

Media embellishes these things to cause fear and make you stay away from them, that is another fact.

Heck, I've had my cravings too but it didn't take me long to realize they are just an illusion... much like love, paranoia, even social anxiety for that matter. I guess SA is something I have yet to master. :D

These heroin users probably never got heavily into it. I've done my share of drugs but never had any addiction other than maybe cigarettes. I knew better than to take too much of something or do it often. I've known people who have done coke but never developed an addiction. I guess I never fooled myself into thinking that I was invincible. I've seen junkies out on the street shooting up and I have always been afraid of ending up like that. My mother's friend said that she and her friends used to do coke but one of her friends ended up becoming and addict and dying from and over dose.

Honestly, I will never know what separates people like me from addicts. I used to think that it was partly self-control, common sense as well as some sense of self-love. I've known people who do drugs and get so caught up they just never bother to take a break. A friend of my husband hung himself while on drugs.

It certainly had much to do with my concern over my child's health. I have done many self-destructive things, but my child is worth more than me. It has all to do with choice. I didn't have to quit but I wanted to. I was never as healthy in all of my life as I was when I was pregnant. I don't think that my child wasn't exceedingly large but the doctors commented on how big she was when she was born. What is most important is that I gave my child the best start in life possible. I still don't have a problem not smoking but I can't say that I know what that is about.

Yup Nicotine is more addictive..You might not get the withdrawals like on heroin, you might not sweat for a month and feel like death. But pure addictiveness wise its really powerfull stuff.Maybe some poeple can flirt about with stuff more and not get addicted quicker than others.

I still cant believe the chemicals which the goverment are alowed to put into cigs!I'n propa ciggies, there are traces of cyanide and all sorts, they put alot of stuff in there which they just dont have to.

Well I doubt they could care less in the uk,they just keep nailing the tax up.And they wonder why they now have a problem with people smuggling cig's and baccy from France and Spain ect

People who smoke are idiots; Cyanide is there to kill the idiots and rid the population of them. "Yeah lets pay $10 a day so we can buy cancer sticks so that we can die a slow painful death all the while smelling repulsive 24/7."

Yes, it is well-known that we have a major problem with the educational systems. I actually thought that having to smoke to look cool and mature would be a matter of the past.

That's possible for some but I knew well what was in cigarettes. They taught us this in health class and DARE.
