What do you guys think of this generation today?

This generation sucks.

Do you mean this generation as in time, or in today's youth?

I will talk about both.

Music videos in the mainstream suck big time. They undermine peoples intelligence and desensitise people, especially young ones, into thinking that is good entertainment and that you have to shake your booty in boys faces or that you have to dance around with multiple girls to look cool. The themese in these videos make me shudder with hopelesness. Incidentially my favourite songs usually come from the 80s and sometimes the 90s. There was a sense of comfort and of strong identity through music, nowadays it's obscure beyond post-modernism. I mean Lady gaga, what is she actually singing about? Does she have any expressions or emotions that are remotely human? There is just a sense of alienation and roboticness.

The movies industry have come a long way of course, since the black and white hollywood era. There are loads of variety now, and a more abstract type of cinema led by people like David Lynch, Lars von Trier who present, ideas in more interesting ways (and what some may say arty farty). But the point is that there are more variety but quality is not necessarily compromised.

Politics, there is less trust in politicians, less respect. There is less cohesion intra-party and less polarity inter party. All politicians seem the same. Big corporations and media moguls (as is the case in the UK and AUstralia) have a strong hold on politicians and public figures so that they tow the line of the moguls. Although I don't know if this had happened in past generations as well. Politics just seem like a big mess and not very inspirational. People lack the faith to vote or to trust the politicians to do what is best for them.

There is a great gap between the young and the old, partly due to technological polarity, partly due to less respect for the old in general. Celerbrities and media outlets portray a fear of looking old, of being old, and the resultant reactions and plastic surgeries fuel the fear of aging in the public. A lot of the disrespect start from the home, where children respect their parents less and less (partly due to hyper PCness intolerant of parents dishing out punishments); parents not utlising the matriarchal/patriarchal rule of past generations. There is a generation of youths left with empty hopes for a career or a future when mass manufacturing facilities and mining towns of the past no longer operate. Mass job migration of the blue collar grade overseas contribute to working class youths either stuck in retail or nothing at all. With no inspiration and no future, no pride in their trade, there is resentment and idleness; they do not care about the old, they do not care about society. Why should they, they feel left out and deserted by the system.

About technology, well, it's a case of either you are with us or against us. Either you jump on the bandwagon and have a rat race with all your friends to see who has what new model and when you are going to keep up. Or you stay obsolete and just get what you need and discard the noise. In an age of Facebook and Twitter, which are now influencing how crime is investigated, where news come from and how much one is kept in the loop in real life, well, social media is big. It's massive. I really wish it isn't. The whole thing is dehumanised, nothing but data and letters on a computer screen. Some have said that this alienated people and relegate human relationships to a superficial level. I have to agree. Social media cannot replace having a laugh face to face, or sharing intimate secrets and seeing eachothers reactions. I don't own an iphone, an ipod, or an ipad. I think these things are used by tech companies to sell you things you don't need nor want but which their advertising tells you otherwise.

Compared to the yesteryears, we have more choice and more technology (but much of it is unneccessary and only serves to confuse and feed the sheep mentality). We have less respect for people in general, and more and more relationships are superficial rather than meaningful. This generation will sooner or later wake people up. There are already movements that call for sustainability and living within your means, and even retro living. I hope the next generation will be a result of the lessons learnt in the present.

^ I agree with this.

The fact that this current generation was produced by the last one has to be taken into consideration. The nurture of the previous generation plays a huge part in the dynamics of the current generation imo.

All people do is complain about this generation when in fact it was them who raised them as they are. But I'm a 90's born kid, so I liked the 90's.

I think society as a whole is quite toxic, immoral and shallow and this is how far we have progressed as a civilisation. Really it is very sad and depressing.

Hippies/stoners are nothing new. You have the 60's and 70's to thank for that mentality.

I remember an article that made a very important point, past times always seem better for a single reason, people is more likely to record and remember what it was good about it, in the previous decades there were tons of bad movies and bad music too, but all that was forgotten and what is reminded now is mostly the good stuff that became classic, and similar thing happens with social achievements. So in the future when we all be elder, young people will say that our time was the real deal.

Yes, I have read the same thing. Don't forget that bad movies and music and politics and people all existed in the 70's, too. Has anyone seen Plan 9 From Outer Space? There's a bad movie! Although I think that was earlier than the 70's.

But yeah, we always look bad with fond memories. While Nicki Minaj is one of the current phenomenons, she won't be remembered when we're much older because we'll look back and say that Madonna was good, unlike today's trash!

an ass-load of brainwashed following Nimrods. My generation is retarded as hell. I wish I was not a part of it. I hope alot of us pull our heads out of our rear-ends. My generation thinks being a "gangster" is cool. Lets see where they'll be in 10 years

I'm very sure past generations said the same thing, and about how being "hippie" is cool.

Every generation has its ups and downs. I guess we focus a lot on the downs.

You have a good point, but in my eyes I think a hippie is way better then a gangster. I mean they beat women and children, kill them, steal, do drugs. Hippies just mainly really did drugs and wanted peace from what i understand. Pretty soon well have to buy life insurance for our kids. I live in Arizona so I see gangs first hand, its real bad out here. There's even girls trying to be damn gangsters, white girls might I add, throwing up the blood signs and everything, its pretty hilarious. It's all over their facebooks. This is what kids out here look up to. My state is mainly African Americans and Hispanics. I myself am half Mexican. But yea, it looks like Mexico out here. The schools are going to ****. No joke 7th graders are loosing their virginities and popping Ecstasy going to raves. Raves are real popular out here same with Ecstasy and 2 years ago heroin started running the streets. It took over everyones lifes out here its soo sad. Kids who aren't even 14 are already to far into it. I can show u guys some disturbing music videos of how their teaching kids to get ****ed up, u wont be able to sleep at night im not kidding. My generations problem is we all want to grow up to fast. Kids are having kids for crying out loud. You just gotta be a part of us to see how bad it really is

So I guess it's fair to say you're very pessimistic about our generation's future?

I work at a primary school, so I'm seeing kids up to the age of 12. You look at some and think that they're going to be trouble later in life. Yet you look at others and you know they're going to be okay. For every trouble child you see, you'll see a good one. I know that's only a 50% success rate, but not all children are like the ones you're mentioning.

I'm not disputing your pessimism because it's rational and justified. Maybe Arizona is a little more dangerous than Shellharbour, I don't know. I have seen bad people myself (I live next door to some, even), but I have met good people, too...some younger than me. My brother studies a lot and has a stable girlfriend, for example, and he's 24. Again, there are lots of people who take ecstasy and break the law. Sydney is going through a spate of drive-by shootings, for example. But there's always people out there that'll carry this generation forward.

I also knew what a rainbow party was, as well, haha. Strangely I've never been invited to one!

This is all very troubling for me, but I was never a kid who was invited to parties or had any friends.

Straight-edge, 'weirdy' , non-religious with strong morals.

This 'generation' of kids really do want to grow up too fast.
My younger brother moved out earlier this year, thinking he could make it on his own at 17; was forced to move back at Christmas time after he wrecked his car.
He'll admit now that having to work full time, pay bills and go to school is tough and it would be better to not have the extra responsibility for as long as possible.

His morals are much stronger than his friends and he's constantly complaining about the girls in his class and how 'gross' they are... for different reasons.
He decided not to date anyone because girlfriends cost too much money and aren't likely to be a 'long term investment'.
haha

If I were a parent today; I would be terrified.
That is all.

Why do you know what a rainbow party is? lol (; But yes, I realize theres more to the world then AZ I'm just giving an example. I have no hope for kids out here. Come to my state and you'll see what I'm talking about. I want to move, theres no way I'll raise my children here if I have any. It's pretty much turning into Compton, Cali just had a head-start because of the gold rush.. But I've had my share with drugs, trust me, and I am not a bad person so I don't judge at all. I'm just very disgusted and disappointed like I'm sorry but you 13 year olds don't need guns and ****. You shouldnt need protection cuz u shouldnt be selling drugs and doing dumb ****. Mexico and the USA I can see having a drug war within the next 15 years if things don't lighten up. Because my state gets the drugs first n its realll bad out here. The Mexicans are saying their going to take our state over and their successfully doing it. The buses that drive by me i cant even understand what it says cuz its in Spanish same with have the signs and billboards. Even stupid homework for kids, they got a page in spanish. I'm sorry but i think if u want to live in my country then u need to learn English because thats what we speak here, we shouldnt have to go out of our way for them cuz they dont understand and are to lazy to make an effort. They live off my states money, it makes me sooo mad. But anyways, we get the drugs over here first, this state is one crazy state let me tell u!

my generation was actually a lot more trouble

we drank and drove and had unprotected sex

and that was the behavior that was condoned by society at the time

nowadays, this sort of behavior among adolescents is looked down upon, not just by the adults, but by the teens themselves

progress

Arizona doesn't sound very nice. I hope you can move out and go somewhere better.

I know exactly what you mean regarding advertising and stuff. Some of that in Australia are in Chinese because the Asian population living in Sydney is quite high. They're all very smart and everything but it upsets me that English is not prevalent. Drugs are not that great here, either.

So I guess all countries have their issues!

I would be too. This generation almost makes me not want to have children, especially a daughter ever since I seen a picture on a 14 year old boys phone of his also 14 year old girlfriend naked on her knees. It disturbed the f**k out of me.

Its almost like when they get to a certain age theyre ripped from you and you have no control over them from that point on. Im serious ive witnessed it first hand. There was a girl who came from the most religious of families, her father was the priest at the local church for over 30 years. She was the defintion of good girl until she got to the golden age of 13 where her friends took her from her parents and introduced her into drugs and sex. Shes 16 now,she has clamidia, and she goes to a special school for people who have broken the law but are too young to go to prison.

I wish I could tell you that that was the only case but unfortunetely not,I know a plethora of kids like this. Its sickening how many girls in grade 9 at my school are pregnant.
