They never did anything for me. My psychiatrist thinks I'm on antidepressants. What he doesn't know is that I had stopped taking it, since it didn't help.

How long did you take them before you stopped? It took a good two months for them to start really working for me and that's actually normal :)

The last one? A few months maybe..

I still feel much better today, it's a miracle. On certain days I'm totally exhausted, depressed and extremely anxious and then I feel better again. It's a cycle. But it would be a big problem at work. On days I feel bad, it's not just "bad" , but indescribably bad. So bad that I can't do anything that day. How am I supposed to work like this ::(:

I have days that I feel so depressed that I can't go into work. Luckily I just e-mail my boss and tell him that I'll work from home that day. My depression seems to run in cycles too. Most days I'm fine, but if housework, homework, and actually work pile up or I miss too much sleep, then I'll get depressed. But usually I only work from home one day per week. I only work at the office 4-5 hours in the morning (I try to get there before most people arrive) and then work from home in the afternoons for 3-4 hours. Telecommuting is the future, why do we need to destroy the planet just to get some work done?

Also if I'm feeling depressed, reading an ACT self-help workbook helps me feel better. ACT is about making room for emotions and thoughts, but not buying into them. Depression and "doom and gloom" thinking is bullshit, and sometimes you have to call "bullshit" on what your mind is telling you.

Hi Sabbath9. You say you work at the office 4-5 hours in the morning, and then 3-4 from home. And you do this once a week, if I understood correctly?

No, I do that everyday. But sometimes I wake up late or feel like shit so I work the whole day from home. I try to go in to the office everyday, but somedays I just don't have the energy. But working from home is hard, so many distractions. I wish I had my own private office at work, maybe then I could work there the whole day, cubicles suck.

Next Thursday night we are going to see Iron Maiden live, in concert. So I'll try to go to the office Monday - Thursday, and Friday I'll probably work from home (the whole day) so that I can sleep in a little. Getting in to work at 7:00 am is hard on headbangers.

I read somewhere that some psychiatrists will prescribe antidepressants with sleep deprivation for patients that don't react to antidepressants alone... It might be worth asking your psychiatrist about, especially since the sleep deprivation seemed to help your mood. Anyways, good luck man.

OK thanks :)

If I had the opportunity to work at home, I would never ever go to an office again. I would lock myself up and do my work. Do you happen to know what type of jobs can be done at home? Last question, I promise, lol :)

Face time at the office is very important. I don't have to sit in on most of the meetings, but meeting with my boss helps me define and refine projects. And believe it or not, sometimes I get more work done at the office then I do at home.

Any kind of job where you sit in front of a computer all day. I do programming, but there's also graphics design, web design, advertising, composing, writing, editing, support, software & game testing, etc. I expect in the future all jobs will have a telecommuting aspect to them. If everyone telecommuted at least one day per week from home we'd have an instant 20% reduction in green house gases created. Videoconferencing is gonna be big too.

Thanks for the info! Learning a new skill is no problem for me, I love studying. If I can work from home, I would be productive, I'm certain...

"try this Sleep Deprivation and Depression on MedicineNet.com who knows, it just might work"

That... sounds like a terrible idea! And i know from personal experience that going with little sleep for an extended period makes depression even worse. It even says that on the page lol.

Hey Argamemnon I feel for you man.

Are you getting any exercise? How about sunlight? How's your diet/nutrition? Have any hobbies?

Hey sickJoke. I don't get enough sunlight, but I do exercise a little (on my treadmill). My diet is quite good. As to hobbies, I have practically none. I think not doing anything contributes a lot. I spend most days behind my computer. I'm definitely going to change this. Not that I think it would change everything suddenly, but it may help me feel better at least. I like reading books so maybe that's something I should start doing again.

I think you're right, having a productive hobby is a step in the right direction. Your diet's good, that's awesome. I know it's hard to find the motivation to exercise when you're depressed, but it really, REALLY helps, the longer and more intense the better. Try and catch some sunlight if you can, it provides essential vitamins. Keep us posted and stay strong.
