So damn frustrated with going to the movies alone!

I always go alone and by now I figure I should be desensitized toward it but I still get feelings of anxiety and loneliness. I saw Shutter Island last night, the theater was really full and this group of girls asked me if the seats next to me were taken or not.
I said that they weren't and one of them gave me a weird holier-than-thou look. I felt awful and struggled to focus and enjoy the movie. (Btw it was an awesome movie, I suggest you go see Shutter Island right away!)

Anyone else with no friends feel this way?

I went to a movie alone once....it wasn't fun. And I don't really worry about what strangers think about me.

I've done it once or twice.. was a little aquard feeling but if you think about it, it's not a social thing... it's to watch a movie and be entertained... You don't have to watch tv at home with someone to enjoy a show... Why is it different at the theater? Besides, you don't have to share your popcorn..:D

I used to do it quite often. Never really had any negative experiences other than what I was thinking inside of my own head. People tended to mind their own business, at least when I went.

When I lived in Malta I went to the movies about 2 times a week, because it was so cheap there. Some times alone and some times with friends.

no i havent seen shutter island yet , i go to the movies quite a lot , ill tell you a great film avatar , but make sure you see it in 3d with the glasses on , its fantastic in 3d ...

I haven't been to the cinema by myself but I understand very much how it is just doesn't feel quite right going to 'social' things by oneself - i.e. restaurants, cinema, bars, casino, etc.
A lot of people think that people who are alone must be boring if they don't do much but it is so difficult to do the things that couples do by oneself. I don't think people who have a social life or have partners realise that.

I've never gone alone but I can get so into a movie I feel completely alone in the theatre focused on it.

As a female in her 20's I would dread the reactions I would get from going alone.

I do sometimes, but only to small local theaters, and during the day when I know nobody else will be there. It's nice. If there's a crowd, forget it--not going alone.

Just irrational fear I spose. I feel weird.

I do like sharing in the experience though to some extent, usually talk about the film after w/ whoever I went with. I kind of wish I had been able to see Avatar. Don't know if I will get around to it.

i'm scared to go to the movies =/ i get really really anxious for some reason.. it's just a lot of people, and a huge screen, and i don't know, haha.. i just start feeling sick and nervous.. i used to like going when the movie was a few weeks old and i (and whoever i was with) was the only one in the theater, but now i get anxious doing that, too..

about going alone, i wouldn't worry about what people think about you being alone, i've seen plenty of people in there alone.. and a few of my guy friends even sit by themselves even if they go with another guy, just because they don't want to sit there by another dude, haha..

I've seen a bajillion movies by myself. Doesn't bother me much. Of course I always wish I had someone that I didn't mind being around to watch it with but I know why I don't so it doesn't bother me much. I do get sick of seeing other guys out with girls 24/7 though.

I actually prefer going to the movies alone. I don't go often as most movies don't peak my interests enough to bother. Usually I wait until they come out on DVD or on HBO. But when I do go to movies I would rather be alone. I like going to Matinées for that reason. Even if it's a really popular movie the theater will be a ghost town early in the day.

So it's come to this. I am actually making a serious thread since I joined this site. After yet another sleepless night, I have come to a conclusion. For far too long I have lived in my comfort zone. And as each day goes by I can feel it becoming smaller and smaller. I have ignored it long enough. I have only one option. I have to push my boundaries or they will get the better of me.

Too long have I hidden, afraid of what others may think of me. Afraid of judgment or ridicule. But though I may hope for an easy solution to my problems, they will not come. If I am to overcome them, I must push myself, and be willing to suffer short term discomfort in exchange for long term peace.

This post is the first step for me in this regards. I am not one to open myself to others. To lay my thoughts or emotions bare for all to see. However, I can not think of a better way to start or a better place to start it then here. remember that thread philly ... your pushing your self now lol ;) so no more alone stuff mate ;)

I always go alone. I am so used to it that I would feel awkward going with anyone else besides my mom. Most of the movies I see are independent films and I usually go to the small cinema in a nearby town. Not much people go there, the theater never gets full. Most of the people that go are middle aged or senior citizens, and my social anxiety isn't so bad around people a lot older than me. I have no friends, so it's either go to the theaters alone or don't go at all, o well.

ive went to a few movies by lonesome on more than one occasion and suffered the awkwardness that is the reactions of other people and my terrible coping mechanisms

but now through the glory that is the internet and a minor delay of 20-30 mins, I dont need to even leave the house and I save money all at the same time.

the internet: making pirates out of us Arrrrrrlll

I've never been to a movie alone. I have some irrational fear of it, too. Like going to a fancy restaurant without a date or something.

So I've become a giant pirate like Nocer lol.
