side note...the extreme

Here's an example of someone who's gone into the social network abyss:

I was on a weekend hike a while back with family (and extended family).
... while we were trying to sleep at about 2 am this person had their cell phone, laptop and ipad all on at the same time. The cell was pinging with reminders, texts, status updates, etc. They could not stay off facebook, or the ipad with tweets, texts, status updates, facebook IM-ing, and whatever the hell else there is... Annoying.
On our way home, this person was driving while uploading pics to their ipad. I got nervous, said something cuz their eyes and hands were no where near the task at hand - driving. Their reply was that the road was not crowded, and we were going in a straight line so it was no big deal.

Yes, this is an extreme case, but just example as to how far it can go.

I have a friend who literally cannot stay off Facebook for more than a day. I offered to buy him a bottle of any alcohol he wants (he's borderline alcoholic) if he could stay off of Facebook for at least three days, but he couldn't even make it through the day.

Facebook is coming from everywhere. It's spreading. Soon, you won't be allowed to exist if you don't have a Facebook profile.

That's bad! Facebook anonymous, coming soon to a church near you.

I know two people, one has Facebook and the other has Twitter. They post every single thing about their lives, unimportant or not, to said sites. The whole world knows their daily routine and more. The Facebook one added their address and phone number too, I think. Not to mention the amount of photos of their face. There was probably over 100 photos of them, of only their face in many different angles.

The Twitter one is even worse because they seem to be posting all day. They even post when they go to the bathroom. I'm not joking.

I've had the disgrace of talking to them a few times. They were the most self centered, selfish, insensitive, attention whoring people I've ever seen in my life. Considering I have really low tolerance for BS, you can tell our "friendship" didn't last very long.

gross, even the bathroom?
hope they don't include *pics from the potty*
Intolerable behavior, I can't stand for all that BS either. Even with SA, I have better things to do with my life.

No pics from the potty, but I've found pics of their food in their album. They liked to publish their dinner a lot.

Funny cartoon. I think the addiction to screens in general is very bad. Especially for SA-people who are already shut-ins.

People become hyper-addicted to it and can't pay attention to the "real world" and people anymore. It all becomes one big flow of constant information processing and consuming.

I watch myself a bit regarding this. People need some time away from their screens in order to be mentally healthy imo. Sometimes I just unplug my cable and it feels liberating. I wish I didn't have the mental urge to replug it. We need to be more selective with our attention spans because it drains a lot of our mental energy.

The driving/uploading thing is dangerous and I think it's good that you spoke up about that. That's stupid behavior, as a driver you carry the safety of your fellow road members, your own and the passengers in the car.

But aren't we a bit judgmental here, though? I don't like the social media hype/obsession either, nor that every single detail has to be discussed amongst peers on a open medium, but we're on this forum semi-daily.

SPW and forums in general are a older type of social media. We talk about mundane things, post pictures, tell jokes, tell use what's on the mind, and share general information that someone- somewhere- might consider irrelevant. How is what we do here any different?

Post you picture thread - General photos of normal people.
Post your random thoughts/feelings etc - Twitter
How are you feeling - Status updates
Food Pictures - Pictures of someone's dinner.
Not to mention the several What's your favorite ***? threads.

I'm not saying that we're wrong for contributing to those threads, I'm just saying that maybe we shouldn't judge them so harshly because they choose to lead their social life a little different and more mainstream.
