I know this has nothing to do with SPW, but I know you guys can help.
So, my computer crashed, died, committed suicide..or just took a nap (not sure what happened) yesterday and I've been trying to "fix" it ... finally I just ended up restoring the system just as it came out of box. Now, I've lost some things, though in safe mode boot up was able to save important things.

To the point: can you guys suggest what I need (should have) to install as far as programs such as Lightroom, anti virus, Photoshop, anti-adware pop up blockers, and anything else .... ? good torrent prog? (lol)

strange request, I know, but unfortunately I didn't make list of programs before restoring...my oops!
I couldn't even do snapshot of my desktop -- oh darn, I could have with my camera...NOW I think of it. oh F me.

Thanks all in advance.

Yeah I bet! ;)

Cowboyup you said something about missing "some things". Did you mean things like registry files or something?

My registry files are ok.
I am having to reinstall things like anti virus program, Lightroom, and I had a pop up ad blocker but can't remember the name.
I should be set - as far as anti-virus, I can re-download lightroom ( I finally found my key)
It seems like I had more things but maybe not.

Yeah I really like avast! too, however I'm actually using AVG at the moment. (avast! we have installed on the family desktop) I also second Ad Block Plus, definitely a must-have for your browser.

What's Running is an excellent program to get rid of some pesky start up programs you really don't want running when you first boot up. It also shows you all the processes that are running on your computer, drivers, etc. It's always neat to check out, but I mostly use it to enable/disable which programs I want running when I first boot.

For defragging I use Auslogics Disk Defrag, for regular cleanup I use CCleaner, and when I'm being a pirate I use uTorrent.

I hope this helps!

Web browser: Mozilla Firefox
External Mail Client: Mozilla Thunderbird (if you use one)
Office Suite: LibreOffice
Media player: VLC
Torrent Client: Tranmission (only for Linux and Mac I think)
Website Editing/Making: KompoZer

All this apps are free and open source.

For Windows:
Anti-Virus: AVAST
CCleaner to remove the cruft (old system files)
JK Defrag 3.6

I assume you're using Windows, becuase you mentioned that it crashed and had to resotre. May I suggest Linux: Ubuntu 12.04?

It's free, more secure then Windows and Mac combined, has a built in firewall, and user friendly.

Has many apps already with it, including Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice Office Suite, Transmission Torrent and more. Also many drivers are included, so you don't need to worry about drivers, nor an anti-virus, or defraggin your computer.

I've been a Linux user for 1.6 years. I know an operating system like this, sounds too good to be true, but it's real.

Here is a screenshot of my computer:

Two free programs that everyone should have:

Piriform - Download

Get CCleaner (to clean cookies, temporary files, etc.) and also get Defraggler to defrag your hard drive once in a while (it's better than Windows Defragmenter).

You don't need to play with the settings in any of them, but in CCleaner, you can go to the Cookies section and add some Web sites, like socialphobiaworld for example, which will be excluded from cookie cleaning. That way, you won't need to log in every time to get on SPW.
