Ok I am very embarassed to admit that I am 30 years old and STILL carry this fear with me

Growing up, my family would always get mad at me for it and never did much about it, I didn't wanna "seek help" because I thought I was crazy

Anyway...I am TERRIFIED of mascot type people. I have no idea why, and I realize its "just a costume" but this fear is so bad I can't go anywhere near one to this day

My brother wants me to go with him to disneyland for his birthday, I wanna go... but the IDEA of it, makes me wanna have a panic attack.

Can anyone help? I know, this is a bizzare fear but its very real to me

See a psychiatrist to get meds. Even just a temporary benzo script just for the vacation. Or, your general practitioner might be willing to help you with it.
See a psychologist to talk it out, & hopefully get better down the line.

I wont take meds. I refuse to medicate myself... so that is not an option for me

I have a simliar fear of clowns. Took me a very long long time to deal with it. I still have anxiety over them but nothing like i used to.

Psych has it right. Definately see someone professional. No one will judge you, and it may help you greatly.

I had meds many years ago and it changed my personality too much. I just hate taking things like that. I don't consider it "NEEDED" so I wont put it in my body

Every other fear I've had, I've dealt with on my own from help with family. I just am not sure how to go about this one. I think if I could actually SEE someone dress up in stages it may help but its not really a option to just randomly do that

fair enough, i can absolutely understand that.

Maybe you should see a professional therapist and mention that strategy to them?. Not as rediculous as it sounds, im sure somthing could be arranged.

I dont think this is bizarre at all, mascots, santa and other suited humans can be terrifying for small children, it's very understandable, maybe this has carried over from when you were little?

Because it is so specific, it would be an excellent fear to challenge and attempt to overcome :)

Found a couple youtube videos... Don't know if this helps..?

Disturbia Wolf - Getting into the Fursuit - YouTube
So what is it like putting on a fursuit or mascot costume? This video shows all the steps I take to get into my critter 'Disturbia Wolf'. For the most part people will have a handler while putting their critter on, but I go it alone in this video.

Transformers Optimus Prime Costume "Transforming Into Prime" - YouTube
I have had quite a few people ask me just exactly how I get into a 10ft Transformers Optimus Prime costume. I figured I should upload this video and let everyone see. Due to the size of the Optimus Prime costume, I sometimes feel like a scarecrow trapped in an Autobot. The Optimus Prime costume is not incredibly comfortable to wear, but the reaction on the faces of people in the crowd is well worth it.

Ok the first two, were interesting. the last two, well I actually laughed but I admit, if I had witness the bloody bunny, id of been insane. ha!

Good to know its not just kids who have this, yes I had it as a kid, no idea why, but it never got "over" so it just got worse in time

Sorry for a double post but I had to tell you about my "small progress"
Today I went to this event with my handicap brother. I hated going but anyway... we were minding our own busienss and behind us comes this kid with a "dog head" on and taps me on the shoulder, I was scared crapless... and stood in fear... my brother screamed from being startled and then he offered me a pamplet and I tok it from him. I was less than a arm length away

Then we saw a full body Snoopy, bro wanted a pic with him, I took it! I was not right next to him but not far either. I wish I could of been brave enough to get a picture with Snoopy too but it wasn't time yet I guess

Sounds like you had a good time and a bit of a breakthrough, so to speak.

I have a 'creepy candy coating' icky fear of people dressed up in elaborate costumes, so I kinda know where you're coming from. It's not strange. :) Perhaps like others had said, you could get some help with a therapist and suggest the exposure therapy you described. I understand you don't want medication - so hopefully you can get some help via a therapist so you can enjoy Disneyland :)

This probably won't help but here's a photo (about 40 years old) of me. Yes, that's me with the Easter Bunny. As you can see by my expression, I SO DO NOT want to be there and by the way, YES, I remember this and I still do NOT like the Easter Bunny - creeps me out to this day. Thanks mom and dad, lol

Good Luck and keep us posted!

Aww that sucks MNM, I've always wanted to be a mascot for a day somewhere. Always imagine that being all dressed up in a costume like that, I wouldn't be shy or anything as you're pretty much anonymous and expected to do all these crazy things. :D
