music can affect SA if you allow it too, it depends whether or not you let it control your emotions, i look at music like a canvas painting that can create an array of colours and emotions, kind of like visiting an art exhibition.

im into indie remixed dance music like the 2 many DJ's style remixing of old garage bands and turning them into something danceable, i highly recommend it because the music is so spontanious and thrilling.

personally i find that most of the music that is played in the top 50 charts to be the most depressing, the black eyed peas, linkin park, good charlotte depress the hell out of me because they only exist to please the label and the radio stations, and also it depends on what kind of heavy music your into, i despise that thrash metal style where the vocalist screams the words and its incoherent, now hard rock music like Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath is heavy music that features brilliant vocalists and catchy choruses backed up with interesting lyrics, same with the who, they were professors in politics and geography.

this decade of music has been the most boring era of music in decades, the eighties and nineties were at least raw and challenging where as these days its just dead.

im into music from groups like Radiohead, the Ramones, Blondie, Public Enemy, Underworld, Sonic Youth, Blur, Beck, Pink FLoyd, Flaming Lips, and the Strokes; and most of the bands i listen to i find inspiring even if its a depressing song at least its creative and realistic.

I like what I like (alt. rock, experimental, dance, loads). I don't think there's a particular type of music that induces anxiety, but I find sometimes listening to music in public makes me really paranoid for some reason :?

do you mean listening to music at a pub or through an iPod, because both can have similar effects. i dont think sa's listen to depressing music, music can be approached like watching a movie that can be have humour, sadness and joy throughout, music is art.

I like metal, industrial, grunge, punk...any rock basically. But metal is the best. Rock is all I'll listen to though....alot of rock songs, mainly metal ones...make me feel better cause of the lyrics and anger. I can relate to alot of metal/rock lyrics...which is what makes me like it so much. And I love the sound of it. Country, rap & pop music makes me wanna shoot myself. Especially country. 8O

I like Christian songs which make me feel calm but I also like depressing music, rock and rap. I express myself through it and it's so important for my SA.I think I couldn't live without music.

For mellow music I go for Elliott Smith, Wintersleep, Oceansize, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, For stuff to pump me up I go for As I Lay Dying, Black Dahlia Murder, Protest The Hero, and All That Remains..

I've been a fan of lesser mainstream music, not to be rebellious but I just feel like a fool listening to hip hop. In fact when I'm in an environment where mainstream hip hopish tunes are playing I feel pretty out of place. But I live in a small town at the moment so that's always going to occur.

Nah , to me, music doesnt help my anxiety , seriously . I mean is great to listen to it but when i have anxiety, i cant focus on what im hearing, even if im wearing headphones and the music is very loud, - i still get anxious.

when im alone, then im able to enjoy the music much more pleasantly :)

i believe music can help you if your in depression but not if you suffer from anxiety

Listening to 'Anxiety' by the Black Eyed Peas and Papa Roach is cathartic to me if I've been anxious recently. I can really get into it. It doesn't raise anxiety overall, it just allows for reflection on it, so that I can let out the frustration when I feel safer, which is good if that's what you need at the time. Sometimes, it's best not to dwell on past emotions.

Music helps me allot. I love also listening to angry stuff including mainly older metal, punk/hardcore punk and some of what gets called "grunge" when I'm in the mood. That stuff is definitely therapeutic in its own way to me. The emotion put into songs in that way really gets me, for example after listening to paper cuts by nirvana or any other songs with a similar effect I'm all sweaty. The same with more energetic punky or metal stuff.
However I also appreciate different kinds of music and different things also make me feel better in a different way. For example if in the right mood I can listen to SOME 80s new wave, and poppy stuff which may be cheesy and often have lyrics I can't relate to, but it somehow gives me a warm feeling. It has more feeling and a nicer vibe I think to most modern pop. But I don't like glam metal from that time.

I love turnin' that brutal death metal up!!

Awesome! What are some of your favourite bands?

I used to listen to a lot of death metal back when I was 17 - 20.. Well, I don't necessarily limit it to death metal, but if you're talking about sub-genres in metal, then death metal is probably my most favourite one. I believe I do have eclectic and weird tastes in music.. doesn't make me a hipster though haha!

Nowadays it's mostly mellow music for me, radiohead, nada surf etc.. I think i'm going to crank me up some metal now just for old times sake!

I notice SAers don't usually like Top 40 stuff. Rock/Metal seems to be a pretty popular genre too.

As for me, music doesn't really affect my anxiety... mind and music are two separate things. Though I listened to a lot of Alt. Rock back when my SA was worse (I suppose there's a link?); lately I've been listening to the more chill-out stuff (except when I'm feeling energetic, that's when all sorts of genres come into the picture).

Yeah, it's a recurring theme of sorts.. great minds think alike I suppose?

Well, back then I listened to metal because I found that it was probably the most diverse genre of all, I mean, there's alot of sub-genres and there's even divisions of the sub-genres.. Am I confusing you? :D

I mostly thought that listening to metal was me non-conforming against the norm. Now I know that non-conformity is pretty much ironic..

Hm, I would say, at school or work I would listen to music (if it's allowed) and it does kind of help me forget about what people are thinking.

I like a lot of genres, but at the moment I'm listening more to Jrock and Alt. Rock.

My favourite band is The Birthday Massacre!
