In Mike Leigh's first film, Bleak Moments more or less all the characters seem to suffer from severe social anxiety!! Needless to say it's one of his least popular films and I'm not sure if it's even available. One of his later films, Career Girls, is worth a look as one of the main female characters is really shy and though she recovers a bit as she gets older there isn't a total transformation so it's one of the most realistic portrayals of 'one of us' that I've seen.

I watched "Dead Poet's Society" tonight. Damn is that a good movie! And yeah, one of the main characters does seem to have a bit of SA. Very good movie!

And that video clip posted from "Punch-Drunk Love," is my favorite scene. I can't even count how many times I've done that whole walking in and out of the door thing, before just going in. hah.

I agree with ljwwriter though, in that I have never seen a movie where the main character has truly had SA. Sure, there have been movies where the characters are shy, geeky, awkward, don't like reading aloud in class, etc, but I have never seen one where it was clear that the character was truly suffering from SA.

Taxi Driver
The Conversation
Lives of Others

All the main characters in the films above are effected by lonliness. Other films that I recommend watching:

The Thin Red Line
Into The Wild
There will be blood

Oh goodness. Darren Aronofsky films are THE best.
Although, Requiem doesn't fall under SA. But soo good.
In fact, it is my favourite movie.
Haven't seen the Fountain yet though.

I've never seen a movie that really directly related to people with social anxiety. Or at least one that centers on a person with it. I've begun to wonder if that's because lives like ours wouldn't make an interesting enough story to tell.
For social anxiety to be the 3rd largest mental health disorder it sure is rather ignored by literature and film. Perhaps I should try to change that someday.

I think it would make an excellent story. After all, everyone loves outcasts, so is this so much different? We seem to have some difficulty distinguishing them on this topic. I have mentioned a few times that I really do plan to try to change the lack of stories about us. Really. This is one of my main long-term goals right now. I hope I'll sometime be a good enough author to do it.

I went into more detail about this in another topic. The Glass Menagerie is an excellent but extremely depressing story involving SP or extreme shyness. Has anyone else seen or read it? It's a very famous play that has been made into three movies. Watch the movie with Katherine Hepburn as Amanda.

I'm sure there are more than we're mentioning, but we haven't seen them or don't define the characters as being "us".

Some great ideas here. I can definitely agree with 'Dead Poets Society', 'Amelie' and 'Adaptation'.

Although they're teen orientated and rather of their time, the Christian Slater movies 'Pump Up The Volume' and 'Heathers' are also worth a watch if you fancy more of an entertaining movie.

However, the best film I have ever seen about low self esteem, hiding from the world and longing for acceptance is 'The Enchanted Cottage'. The 1945 version. It is spellbinding, romantic and dark in equal turns. It remains my favourite film of all time for many reasons. You can read a little more about it here.

Definitely Lars and the Real Girl. It's a new movie.

If you're into anime, there's a good series called Welcome to the NHK about a modern-day japanese hermit

Oh, and any Mad TV skit with "Susan Whitfield"

Try 'Hearts in Atlantis' - one of my favorite movies. A very special movie. I wouldn't call it lonely, although it creates a certain atmosphere of loneliness. It is thoughtful and warming.
