Battery hen: The chickens you are eating

Battery hens in cages

Chickens freed from their cages

***********

I know that some people will be offended or unhappy with this... but I feel a strong sympathy for the plight of the battery hen. No creature should be caged in such confined cages with no freedom or natural exercise. These chickens could not even stretch their wings. Many have been debeaked and many more have their legs broken.

I'm writing this just to raise general awareness, to remind myself and others... I had actually intended to write about this when I first joined the site, but forgotten. The high global population as well as our cultures' excessive craving for meat has led to the mistreatment of our animal brethren.

It's quite horrible. I've never had anything against the eating of meat, but I've always been strongly against the methods of the meat industry and any other industry that uses these questionable methods for profit. Here in Holland there has been a commercial going on, telling people to check out the source of their meat/natural product.

They hope it will lead to people spending a little more money for meat/eggs so that this doesn't happen anymore. They aim to get animals back on fields where they can at least life a normal life before they meet their fate. It's gonna make meat and natural product considerably more expensive, but I'd say it's a small sacrifice on our part.

Totally agree. They should have a lot more space. ::(: But what can we do against it ? It's not only the chickens, it's everything. I once saw a video of how cows etc are threated when they slaughter them. They don't put them asleep, they kill them brutally, and with this I mean they put the cow in a machine and that machine just smashes the head and things like that. I would love to kill those people.

This world is a real nightmare.. People who don't care about the suffering of animals piss me off!!! This exploitation of animals shouldn't exist. I hate people for their greed for meat.

One reason I eat organic free range chicken and eggs, very sad....

Same here, tho' I mostly buy the fake chicken and beef burgers. And if you think these pictures are bad, you should see the chickens that McD's & KFC use.......

I'm walking through the grey walkway of the city
And through the brightly lit shops and supermarkets
And I'm walking through the fields of the innocent
Passing by the fairytale farm
Balancing on the brittle edge of a short life
That is ended by the knife

The factory's still churning out, all processed, packed and neat
An obscure butchered substance and the label reads "meat"
Hidden behind false names such as pork, ham, veal and beef
An eye's an eye; a life's a life, the now forgotten belief
Yet, everyday production lines are feeding out this farce
To end up on your table, then s**t out of your a***

Yet, still you're queuing, and still you're viewing
Sawing out limbs just right for stewing
Carcasses piled up in a heap
Sort, soft, juicy chunks from freezers deep
Well, can't you see that that juice is blood?
From newborn throats, red rivers flood
Blood from young hearts blood from the vein
Your blood, their blood, serves the same

Now you're at the table, sitting, grinning
Sitting there eating, you never realise the filling
It's served upon a sterile plate, you don't think of the killing
The furthest your brain takes you, "is it for frying or grilling?"
You moan about the seal cull, about the whale slaughter
But does it really matter whether it lives on land or water?
You've never had a fur coat; you think it's cruel to the mink
Well, how about the cow, pig or sheep. Don't they make you think?
Since the day that you were you born, you've never been told the missing link?

As I'm gazing at the baneful products
And from behind the bright colours and false smiles
I can smell the lingering death
And see the decaying skins
Forth from the green grass
The pungent smell of decomposing meat
That penetrates the walls of the kitchen
And from the red lorries on the black
In unison with the red lights and the red juice

The Sunday kitchen spills out the stench of the abattoir
The butcher's blade glistening in the eye of the 'master'
The deadened life of a baby sits upon the plate
The spilt guts falling from the chute to the basting tin
The carcass from the carcrash
In the age of the train-direct from the gates of Sobivor

It won't stop me eating meat. But like Remus I watch where it comes from. Shop at Amish markets etc.

Actually, I've been meaning to ask about that... I thought it was just an urban legend or so I'm told. How EXACTLY is it or can it be worse?

I'm a little surprised by the responses on this thread to be honest. I often try to post on this subject in my writings or on other forums. In other threads (not my own), I've seen people who completely ignore the suffering and say that the chickens don't really feel pain.. or that it's THEIR problem not ours...

I've even read a woman who said that she is very glad that the chickens are suffering. She claims that they deserve it... I think another person said that the chickens will try and oppress and hurt one another even when they're given the freedom to roam about... I'm not sure how they can hurt themselves worse though... so if there are any chicken farmers/tenders here, maybe you can give your opinion on this.

I have chickens and guineas. Sometimes the chickens will pick on one particular chicken and pluck the feathers off her tail, that much is true. That isn't always the case though. Chickens are currently getting along just fine.

In any event, the guineas don't do that, and they have more freedom than the chickens (they fly out of the pen and roam around the ranch during the day).

My info's a little rusty by now (been a few years since I last studied this stuff. I just learned to avoid corporate meat and stopped reading up on it.), but I know the chickens are de-beaked and have their feet removed and put four-to-a-cage, cages stacked five+ high.
They crap all over each other.
They are de-beaked because the farmers found the chickens were going insane being cooped 4 in a tiny space for years (imagine yourself in that position!) and were pecking/scratching each other to death...

^^^ I agree with Phocus!
It doesn't just show you what's wrong and potentially what's going on, but it shows you hope and a way out.
I quote it sometimes, when it says everything you buy is a vote.

^^^ everything you buy is a vote.

Jello Biafra (ex-Dead Kennedys) always adamantly points this out in all his speaking tours.

A few blocks from where I live is a chicken-garage, where the chicken trucks come in to have the cages hosed out. It used to be open-air, but residents had to complain for years to have it covered. Man, what a horrible stench.
A few years back an anarchist-prankster group had a guy dressed in a chicken costume dance around in front of the place handing out pamphlets describing the plight of non-free-range chickens...
