A person who doesn't speak ever?

I'm not talking about a person who seems to be quiet(for whatever reasons.) But what's a person who never talks at all. Like uses sign language, responds questions by nodding or shaking their heads and writes things out on a paper instead. will their voices grow weak after they finally want to talk. Will they be unable to talk because their vocal chords a dying out or something. Is that possible for someone never to talk. Either way I wouldn't think less of them if they did have some condition or just a tragic event happened that they won't ever speak up again.

Dunno if it is possible for someone to just never ever say a word. Just think of all the swear words you use when something's going wrong.. you don't mean to say ****, you just do ^__^

I'm quiet but I know I would go crazy if I don't ever speak. In fact, I almost lost it when I lived away from home for 2 years. My brother on the other hand seems to enjoy being quiet all the time at home, even though he's not mute. I think he has selective mutism. He doesn't talk to me or my dad and he rarely goes out.

Ok, I don't know if you're referring to someone specific or you're just wondering, but anyways...I can think of a few cases where a person would never talk, but I don't know a lot about the details.

One scenario would be a deaf person. Often, they never learn to talk because they can't hear other people talking. They can often still make noises and some of them do learn to speak. So I guess their vocal chords still work. Maybe they're just underdeveloped. The terms dumb and mute can mean that a person doesn't talk at all. But I think they can refer to someone who doesn't talk due to being deaf, or someone who is physically incapable of speaking.

Then there's a condition called selective mutism. Again, I don't know a lot about it, but I think it's when a person can't speak in certain scenarios. I'm pretty sure a girl I knew when I was a kid had it. She would play and join the group, but she rarely, if ever, said a word. She couldn't even read in class. She had to read at home with a tape recorder and take it back to school. I don't know what happened, but she grew up and got over it at some point.

There's also something known as feral child. I saw a documentary on TV about it once. It's when a child is so neglected and sheltered that they don't develop normally at all. There's some critical point in their life that if they miss their chance to learn how to speak, they'll never learn. I think there was one girl that was kept in a dark closet her whole life. Then there was a boy who lived with a pack of dogs. They protected him because he helped them find food. Then he just crawled around and acted like a dog. It was really sad.

The actor James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader in Star Wars) didn't speak for years, between the ages of 7 and 13, because he had a terrible stammer.

There a pupil who just stopped talking one day at the school where I work (autism specific special school). I don't think she said and thing for about a year. Now she some times says stuff here and there but very quietly. She mostly writes stuff down on a piece of paper.

I saw this guy on Ted, the thing where people give talks about a number of different subjects, and he chose to not talk for something like 15 years. I can hardly remember why he did it. It was something about wanting to actually listen to people. He would write everything down when he wanted to respond to something. After the 15 years was up, he started talking again, and he had no problems. I think he it was from around 20 to 35 years of age. He somehow was able to get his doctorate in the meantime also.

I don’t have a problem with people who don’t speak at all for whatever reason, but it’s very emotionally and mentally draining to interact with some. I’ve spent 1-2 hours having “typing conversations” with my brother, sitting there for the entire time, and it’s very draining. I pull up a notepad or wordpad software on my laptop and then we would take turns typing. The entire time, he would be hovering over me, standing a little behind me, or sometimes I would be standing without looking at him (because he doesn’t like being looked at). Several times in the past, I did suggest that we use email or chat to communicate instead of having 1-2 hour-long marathons of typing on wordpad, but he objected. He told me that he doesn’t trust email or online communication because there’s the possibility of being spied on. Let me tell you, typing with someone on wordpad for 1-2 hours is like h*ll. If I quit in the middle of the “conversation”, he would force me to do it again with him. And I’m not even paid to do this. Paranoia mixed with selective mutism is a lethal combo.

I used to do this with one of my friends during junior high, before we had the internet. We would have sleepovers and just take turns typing a conversation back and forth all night. We could have easily just talked, but whatever, we had fun.

I think it's possible in some children when they're in kindergarten some have selective mutism; they know how to speak yet they choose not to.
I don't know if there have been studies done on it though.
