"NY gunman quiet loner; victim outgoing family man"

Well, he probably was a quiet, he probably didn't have many friends, but there are hundreds and thousands of people who are just as quiet and just as lonely - doesn't mean they're going to go out and kill anyone.

The press doesn't think about what it's saying half the time.

The press always chooses headlines that will shock and attract people to their stories. It's more shocking to the public that "a quiet loner" killed a man in cold blood than "a hyper-violent street thug", which gets people like myself crazy looks at work.

I don't know. It looks to me like the press are once again re-inforcing the stereotype that quiet or introverted people are not to be trusted. They seem to love playing up the "quiet loner" = "danger to society" angle. Because no extrovert ever killed anyone, right?

Sorry but maybe I didn't word my response right. Yeah you're right. It's how they portray us that I don't like. They've become shock jocks in a sense. They'll take a little factor like "quiet loner" and just blow it out of proportion to make it sound dramatic instead of just detailing the crime.

I want to extend on this topic, but I don't want to be disrespectful when covering it. Journalist can be unoriginal because they can't think of a decent name for their topic to pull in views before they hit their line. So they come up with poor crock like this because it's simple minded. The person who wrote this seriously thinks like that? *Not impressed. *Files nails.

Every time a drama happens, it seems to be a lunatic quiet person, damn, we're all killers now.

I saw that headline today too and thought the same thing. The quiet loner is something the media does all the time, but this one went a step further by defining the victim as an "out going family man." It's as if not only are the quiet ones dangerous, but they go after the normal good loud people

Is it possible to discriminate against a personality type? Because everywhere I turn in this culture it seems that people discriminate against introverted people. "Loner" "freak"--all of these have pejorative connotations.

It's the media's job to get people's attention by making interesting article headlines. Making the victim a quiet loner makes their article a more interesting read. That's why they mention it.

The media could care less if they offend anyone. They are out to make money, as are many other professions.

Same old misconception, subtly reinforced by that silly headline.

I guess some folks need to acquaint themselves with the old George Carlin bit about how it's not the quiet ones you have to watch. "I'll bet you anything that while you're watching a quiet one, a noisy one will ****ing kill you!"
