Like being too lazy to go out and see people:kickingmyself:, I agree that some people would say that they feel lazy because its too hard to face people and it takes a lot of effort to face people?:alone::thumbdown:

**SP: Social Phobia

There's definitely merit to it. But I don't think "lazy" is the term I'd use. Lazy would imply that people simply couldn't be bothered, or that they would have no ambition what so ever to try and do things.

It takes a lot of strength to challenge one's self, I wouldn't call it lazy if someone isn't ready to do that. I prefer to look at it as trying to tackle a challenge for which people have not yet found the means to successfully overcome said challenge.

Lack of will/ambition/motivation, rather then energy.

Actually, my SP comes from horrible experiences with people. I used to go out and see people, but I've been bullied, hated, and abused (verbally, sometimes physically), so I've developed a fear of people. I'm also very sensitive which makes the SP even worse.

Thanks buddy....you should've also added the reason to add that option...

Because the poll question "Does anyone doubt that thier SP might be connected to lazyness" looks like it was either made through ignorance of the condition or to start a flame war. Is it possible something was lost in translation here? It's a pretty insulting statement. Laziness is really a bad word to use against people that avoid things through fear or terror.

I added the extra option to give people the vote as to whether they felt upset or trolled by your analogy.

I think lazy people would not feel guilt and shame for avoiding. SAers are consumed by it.

connected?

well, I suppose from an external view point both can be seen as someone trying desperately (or deceivingly?) to avoid having to do something.

I think their motives are completely different though. In fact, like Remus said, labeling someone who is social phobic as lazy is torment for their self esteem... and the cycle continues...

I think I understand where CursedSoul is coming from. You feel lethargic and you don't seem to have the energy to get up and go. That's mainly because going out makes you anxious and the anxiety actually burns up a lot of energy. So, you feel down and depleted......which is a lot like feeling lazy.
People with SA often times have a mild form of Depression. Which again, will leave you feeling sluggish.....very easy to confuse with laziness!

I think it's a good thread. I can see how someone can mistake their SA for laziness. Besides, spend enough time in the house laying around (not going out due to SA) and you begin to "feel" lazy.
That being said, as implied in my first post, SA is NOT caused by laziness.

Yeah thats correct interpertation of what I meant...feeling lazy because it takes too much too tolerate those hyenas giving mean smiles at you and being rude to you...It feels like too lazy to make that effort all the times...
