Something that had a life changing effect on me a few years ago was visiting the Birkenau and Auschwitz camps. Spending the day walking around there, seeing and feeling the the horror that occurred put my life very much in perspective. I never really felt as self-indulgent and sorry for myself after that, how could I, my life is a paradise in comparison. I am a beefy 6ft guy with a face that would scare a young child but I spent most of my time there with tears streaming uncontrollably down my face. I'm actually welling up at the moment just remembering it.
I don't talk a lot, but I couldn't physically talk for about two days afterwards I was so in shock. You hear about that place but when you actually see it and feel it, something inside snaps.
