Online work (and other work)

Hi there. I've read a few times on how some of the people in these forums have difficulty finding conventional work for one reason or another. I actually do my work online and get a small income. Nothing much, but it does help and I don't have to interact with anyone whatsoever.

I'm not sure if this topic has been done before, but the idea here is to show some GENUINE online work opportunities. I'm well aware that there's a lot of scams out there, so please suggest only if you're pretty certain.

These are a few that my friend (also an online worker) have personally gone to.

Odesk (requires quite a lot of communicating via webcam though)
Triond (I've not done well here... at least not yet)
Helium (Doing well. Thank God)
Elance
Squidoo
Associated Content (Heard that it has a high upfront)

I can't vouch for the above personally, since I've not done all of them, but I've actually done Helium and found it to be quite a good place for those who have some (almost any) ability to write.

My (another) friend's wife has done some surveys, but I don't have any names since I lost her contact. I know that she earned almost 2k just working part time on those surveys. Unfortunately, most survey sites are scams and you should only work on it when you're absolutely confident and see no obvious signs of scam...

Hmmm... I'm very sorry. I'm not doing a good job of this. But anyway, do share if you have a good online work opportunity. This is a sort of 'pass it forward' for me as my friend really helped me out when he guided me into the world of online work.

wow! thanks for sharing that :)
was just looking for some way of working online

No problem at all. I hope you'll find it useful. There's plenty of opportunities online for just about anyone willing to put in the effort. You just have to separate the scams from the genuine opportunities.

hi all,
you can find survey sites at - uksurveysclub.com these are all free to join and can make you a little money ( nothing to write home about tho ). i have found the best two to be surveyhead ( $5 for joining and yes it is american but it has a uk site and after you regester it coverts to pounds) and valued opinions. the other bonus to survey sites is you sometimes get free products to try ( i have had sensodyn toothpaste & head and sholders shampoo ). more money can be made from the paid sites but be careful it is a minefield, some site charge you then all they do is give you all the free sites to join which you can do for free at the above site. the other thing you can do ( if you have a bit of money behind you a few hundred will get you started ) is drop shopping. i will let you research this fully for yourselfs, the biggest one to join is e-source. just to give you a basic summery of what it is, a auction site ( bit like ebay) for wholesale lots, you have to pay to be a member but you can pick up some good lots, you then sell these on ebay. but the key to it is you never touch the items, when they sell you inform e-source ( e.g ) and they ship them for you. that is just a basic guide and as i say its best if you look into it yourself but their are quite a few companies offering this service online now. i know everone say's this but it would not be right not to finish with it for online work - if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

I also know of a few people who managed to do some pc games and successfully market them online... These are just teenagers but they managed to earn about 7k from the game they developed. Took a few months, but then again, like I said, they were not above 20 and were just beginning to really be good at game programming. Game programming is not something that appeals to everyone, but it does go to show that there's a really huge range of ways to make money online.

I hope to keep this thread open and hopefully free from scam spams. A good rule of thumb is to simply avoid sites that require you to pay any money upfront. The legitimate sites are usually all free to join. From what I've seen, all manner of skills can help you in online work, but the ones that make the most money seem to involve a huge talent in 3D graphics (which I lack). Writing, SEO, admin and others all earn money too just a lesser amount from what I've seen but then again, I'm a relative newcomer myself.

Please suggest more sites if you have some in mind that you're sure are not scams. Or better yet, you've actually earned money from. I feel this is a way to actually help some people on the forums in a more direct way.

Thank you very much for this helpful list!

I have tried to find ways to make a bit of money online but to no avail - most sites either look like a scam or seem like the payout would hardly be worth the trouble, but I do like the look of the Helium site - exciting! Thanks again!

That's great :) It's especially good to know about that Helium site, since I'm good at writing. As for the survey things, people should beware because not all of them are legit. I took some through some company (can't remember what it was called, unfortunately) & was supposed to get paid for each survey I completed. I completed over 50 surveys & never received so much as a penny for any of them so it was a big waste of my time.

No problem. Glad you found it helpful. I tried that too, looking around for myself. It's not really efficient. Easier to learn from others who have done it. In my case, I've had a couple of friends who have done it for a year or two.

Wrt Helium. It will pay you a few pennies per day if you don't do well. If you're highly rated, you'll probably earn about ten US dollars a day while starting out. I know that there are some who earn fairly ridiculous amounts of money even when starting out due to an innate talent in writing.

The way it works is that there's a passive income and an upfront payment system. There is also a 'marketplace' where you work directly with clients (no, you don't need to communicate with them at all). There are about three other miscellaneous ways of earning money too.

There's this woman who manages to earn about 500 US dollars a month on passive income alone, but then again she has been working there for seven years. It's not quick and easy money, but there's a good chance of earning some money. At the worst, you'll get some pennies and improve your writing skills.

You need to accumulate 25 dollars before you can withdraw though...

I'd say that a heck of a lot of them are not legitimate and are outright scams. But the genuine ones are lucrative. You just won't earn a passive income. For your case, it might be legitimate, but some of these survey works will only pay you once you've completed a HUGE number of surveys (say 500 or so). And sometimes that's only mentioned in the fine prints. Or at least that's my friend's wife's experience.

WRT Helium: Go for it. If you're concentrating on studies or other work, go slow. But if you're not doing anything much, then definitely go for it. Even if you don't get well-rated, the passive income does help if you choose your topics wisely. Some writers there earn over a hundred dollars in passive income a month with just several articles/works.

Before you join Helium though, be aware that there's an invite bonus. This means that you can get a total 5% increase in earnings if you join in pairs. As in the person inviting will get a 5% bonus. Hmmm... I'm not explaining this well... Let me look around for a bit.

*** From the site itself ***

"Invite-a-writer ™: Let your smart friends do the work for you. “Invite-a-writer” is a way for you to spread the word about the great communal writing spirit at Helium, to help the site grow and to earn more money. For every person you invite who registers and writes, you earn a 5% bonus based on his or her article earnings. The more successful invites you have, the greater your Invite-a-Writer earnings. "

*** End Quote ***

It's not stealing the earnings from your friend or person you invited. You just get a bonus, that's all. I'm just saying this because my friend who showed me the website didn't expect me to join so fast. And now that I'm earning, he's slapping his forehead :) ...

I have to do a disclaimer again though. It's not easy money. Just another way to make fairly good money for those with some talent in writing. And a way to make slightly more than pocket change for almost anyone who can string a decent paragraph together. Another thing to note is that Helium doesn't require exclusive rights as of the time of this post. Some websites do require exclusive rights though, so if you're a newcomer to online writing, this is something to be aware of.

Alright all. Thanks for replying and sharing.

Let's keep this running yar? Oh and if possible, try to indicate if the website is country or region specific... Hmm... I'm pretty sure that Elance is specific to US. Should have included that in my first post.

Lol... The things people do to avoid human interactions.

You mean what? Online work? Not really. Most go for it for the work freedom and sometimes, it just pays more especially in terms of passive income potential.

Well good to see you again too :p

No, I'm sure some do; but its a gamble really. Either you will lose something or will gain something. But as I was reading, I remeber a thread about jobs that don't have to interact.

Good to see you too :) How are things? Hmmm... I like the other avatars and drawings much better, especially the one with the guy underneath the cyan nightsky... Anyway, it's true that some do it to avoid interacting. In that case, the Odesk website isn't too good since it requires a lot of webcam video conferencing..... About what you said on jobs that don't need interacting... yup. I've read that too. But I figured that most of us really live far away from one another to recommend specific places to work in. This online work is something that can be accessed by anyone with a connection. From personal experience, it's not a gamble. You just have to know which sites are legitimate and which are scams (many, many scams)... Hence, my idea of having a thread where we can discuss some possible legitimate sites.

On topic: Oh... and it's also good if you can post reliable forums that deal specifically with online work.

I've always been interested in this, well more so intrigued, but it seems that it is really ridiculously difficult to find something that's actually real. I just recently did some searching and found a site that seems somewhat legitimate. www.clixsense.com It doesn't seem too overly flashy and shady.

I've done some very quick research on it. I'm somewhat ambivalent since there's a controversy surrounding some aspects of it. But if you do join up, let us know how it goes yar? And thanks for sharing.
