Online work (and other work)

Out of all the sites you listed, I'm on Triond, Squidoo, and Helium.

Some people do well on HubPages and make quite a bit of money. I know it's possible to make at least $1000 a month there, but as far as I know, it's hard to do.

I may try selling E-Books and believe a lot of money could be made by selling them. I'll write an E-Book, put it up on various sites, try to garner traffic, and see how well I do. If I don't do well, I'll try to earn money some other way. All I hope is that I can get a decent-paying online job...

Thanks for the suggestion of Hubpages. Surveys are pretty good, but there's no passive income. About 2k per month is possible even for part-timers. Hmmm... I'll probably have to consolidate the list in the beginning by editing it once there's a lot of suggestions in this thread.

Bumping. Because I think this is something that can potentially help some people. I also want to include more links, but feeling depressed right now. Hope to get to it.

This would be great, but unfortunately I suck at writing, not only is my grammar and spelling bad, but I wouldn't know where to start when it comes to posting articles.

I really would like to find something like this, something that I could even just get say $500 a month doing things, but what it seems is most is chancy, and based on writing abilities etc.

I'd say that a heck of a lot of them are not legitimate and are outright scams. But the genuine ones are lucrative. You just won't earn a passive income. For your case, it might be legitimate, but some of these survey works will only pay you once you've completed a HUGE number of surveys (say 500 or so). And sometimes that's only mentioned in the fine prints. Or at least that's my friend's wife's experience.

WRT Helium: Go for it. If you're concentrating on studies or other work, go slow. But if you're not doing anything much, then definitely go for it. Even if you don't get well-rated, the passive income does help if you choose your topics wisely. Some writers there earn over a hundred dollars in passive income a month with just several articles/works.

Before you join Helium though, be aware that there's an invite bonus. This means that you can get a total 5% increase in earnings if you join in pairs. As in the person inviting will get a 5% bonus. Hmmm... I'm not explaining this well... Let me look around for a bit.

*** From the site itself ***

"Invite-a-writer ™: Let your smart friends do the work for you. “Invite-a-writer” is a way for you to spread the word about the great communal writing spirit at Helium, to help the site grow and to earn more money. For every person you invite who registers and writes, you earn a 5% bonus based on his or her article earnings. The more successful invites you have, the greater your Invite-a-Writer earnings. "

*** End Quote ***

It's not stealing the earnings from your friend or person you invited. You just get a bonus, that's all. I'm just saying this because my friend who showed me the website didn't expect me to join so fast. And now that I'm earning, he's slapping his forehead :) ...

I have to do a disclaimer again though. It's not easy money. Just another way to make fairly good money for those with some talent in writing. And a way to make slightly more than pocket change for almost anyone who can string a decent paragraph together. Another thing to note is that Helium doesn't require exclusive rights as of the time of this post. Some websites do require exclusive rights though, so if you're a newcomer to online writing, this is something to be aware of.

Hi, what do you mean by exclusive rights? As in copyright to your work?

@ all:

For those without writing talents... I've mentioned in my initial post that other talents like art, CG, admin and many others can be of use too. Try out Odesk. The competition is VERY tough and you need some videoconferencing, but it you have a specific talent then it might be worth a shot. Again, I don't claim to be anything of an expert. Just sharing what I know.

@ Chair:

Thanks for the tips. Yup, I know about SEO. But I'm a relative beginner at SEO. F

@Chihiro:

Exclusive rights means (afaik) that only that company/website can print your work. You cannot submit that same work to another company/website.

@Aisme:

Hi there. I'm fairly sure that most of the websites I've stated at the beginning as well as many others that I've not stated are worldwide (E.g: I live in Asia too). Some of them offer additional benefits for the country the website is based in, but sites like Odesk and Helium do operate internationally. Some survey sites are also international. But beware of any website that asks you to pay a fee (even a small one) before being allowed to enter the site. Many (MANY!) of these are scams.

Hmm... maybe I'll share some of my other experiences as well. I've gained quite a bit of money through mutual funds. I've also lost some money through forex. I'd advise against playing around with these kinds of investments, online or otherwise, unless you are REALLY sure you know what you're doing. In particular, forex is a negative sum game if you're not playing the carry trade and... well, if you really want to do these sort of things, try it out virtually first (using simulation programs/ training accounts) so that you won't lose actual money while learning.

Let's see... You can try setting up your own website if you've interesting content. This is definitely based on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) where you try to drive visitors to your website through having good content as well as specific SEO strategies. Some people even managed to get money through donations on youtube by having outstandingly good content such that people actually donate to them. It's not much, but it's definitely more than pocket change especially considering that the Indonesian rupee is weaker compared to other currencies.

There's also E-books, Ebay and many other avenues open online. You'd just have to find them and figure out which are scams and which are legitimate and suitable for you.

@ Tempus:

If memory serves, I recall that you're excellent at computer work and related technology. There's definitely an avenue for that online... Some of the people I'm acquainted with who do online work are like you. Just that they decided to go freelance. They do it on the sidelines usually, though some have found that they actually earn more online than in their day jobs and so went online full time.

***

Please suggest sites and other things related to online work if you've something constructive in mind. This can be a great way to help those of us who have difficulty with traditional day jobs.

I also trade stocks online. I only recommend it if you have a lot of capital, dont have a risk adverse personality, and have educated yourself. At the moment my dividend payouts alone provide a steady income to pay for my monthly groceries. My aim is to have my investment portfolio pay for my rent as well.

Although some of these online jobs require a lot of hard work like real-life jobs, they provide passive, reoccurring income which is one step closer towards freedom. SA or not, I really dont think people should have to work most of their waking hours and enjoy life 2 weeks out of the year. Its shocking how 40 hour work weeks have become the norm. I hope you all try to find some source of passive income to reduce some of your time required to work. The key is to read millions of books and educate yourself. Work smart, not more!

Have you made money off of forex? I've never met anyone who has done this consistently and is not part of some ... what's the word? Conglomerate? Where they have many members do some kind of timing to influence the market... technically, it can't be done due to the vast size of the forex market, but I've been told that some actually have done this...

I think my friend may have made money off of forex, but then he's working as part of some large company and trade in the millions everyday and might be doing stocks as opposed to forex... I don't know... my experience with forex was extremely negative. Just wondering if anyone has very good profits with forex as I'm thinking more and more that it's just not a viable way to earn for 99.99-% of people. My friend is stubbornly holding on to trying forex though, even when it's cost him lots of money.

.

Yes, well my skills sadly lack when it comes to programing, and that is the main thing that people want from online workers. So it is hard to find anything, besides the fact I have very little to show.

The Odesk site has some work for admin, CG, SEO and many other tech-related miscellaneous jobs. You'd have to video-conference quite a bit and compete with a huge number of people to get any work though. Still, if you've very strong CG talents, then there's definitely a lot of opportunities both online and in conventional day jobs.

I once tried to set up my own business when i was about 14/15 years.
It was me buying hair extensions in bulk online then dyeing and cutting them and selling them online to make a profit. And making hair accessories myself like bows and clips.

I got a few orders but then stopped it. Dunno why i just couldnt be bothered :)
That required bascially no contact in working.
I've won a few make-up competitions online worth allot of money but not actual money.

That was me I think lol. They're always looking for new workers from all round the world so worth a look if you fancy working from home.

That's something I don't understand. The site itself says that only UK residents or UK based can apply? *Confused*
