I have to do a report on mental illnesses in health class so why not this? I have a few questions i would like to ask each of you who would like to respond. Please respond to the best of your ability.

Here we go!

1)When did you realize you had social phobia?

2)What events/things occur in your life that make you anxious?

3)While having S.P., do you experience other problems (shyness, low-confidence, other mental illnesses etc.)? What are they?

4)How are you dealing with social phobia (therapy, medicine, daily routine etc.)?

5)If you were rid of S.A. or S.P. what would you be doing?

OP: Name the most S.A. thing you did (this was a previous forum thread :p)

OP: Tell a social phobic thing that you did in everyday life. I love to hear stories.

There are so many resources on this site, it is unimaginable!!!

Please respond...nobody will judge you because everyone is here for a reason.

1)When did you realize you had social phobia? 16 after my bf and I had problems because I couldn't face his family

2)What events/things occur in your life that make you anxious? - pretty much any kind of social interaction at all - driving, cashiers, phones, answering doors, speaking to people, walking down the same street as someone....

3)While having S.P., do you experience other problems (shyness, low-confidence, other mental illnesses etc.)? What are they? Shyness, lowered confidence, depression, irritable bowel syndrome...

4)How are you dealing with social phobia (therapy, medicine, daily routine etc.)? I took a job which requires me to kiss ass all day (waiting tables), I was in therapy for a while, which helped, I go on here for advice/stories, and I try to force myself to interact with others.

5)If you were rid of S.A. or S.P. what would you be doing? probably making more friends and going out more.

OP: Name the most S.A. thing you did (this was a previous forum thread :p) Hm...that one's hard. I can't remember any specifics but probably times where I hid in my room for an entire day or more because my roommate had people over and I didn't want them to see me. I'm sure I've had more interesting experiences to tell but I can't remember them at the moment.

OP: Tell a social phobic thing that you did in everyday life. I love to hear stories. One thing I do in every day life is freak out when I drive to work or to go shopping. I have this bad fear of people driving behind me cause I think they're judging how fast I'm going or if I'm making mistakes. I can't stand it. I'll be driving and continually watch them through my rearview mirror.

1. I was very young... I would say around the age of 6.
2. Mainly going out to a public place. Taking tests, and having to do homework it right up there too. Being in class with pretty and young ladies in their 20's, gives me HUGE fits of anxiety... I feel like a disgusting oger in situations like that.
3. Poor self esteem, depression because I feel I don't fit in, alone, isolation...
4. I was seeking help, and tried many psychologists and psychiatrists. Tried many different kinds of drugs, talk therapy, light therapy. Nothing seemed to work. Right now, I am doing nothing for my problems. I feel like I am too old to even try to achieve my goal of getting my first girl friend at the ripe old age of 41...
5. OMG!!! I would be a man whore, I have too many years to make up for lost time... Haha!

Mostly, when my anxiety gets to be bad. It usually makes me get very bad stomach cramps. The kind of cramps that double you over and it hurts too much to even stand vertically. I avoid all people when I am having to go shopping. I avoid eye contact mainly because I don't want to talk to people in general.

1)When did you realize you had social phobia?
well.. i've had anxiety/panic disorder since i was about six (i'm 21) but i handled it and i never had much of a problem with being around others or being at school or sporting events until 10th grade (so i guess about 15) ..and then i came completely agoraphobic in May of this year at the age of 20

2)What events/things occur in your life that make you anxious?
anytime that i have to face the public, any time i get in the car to leave my house for any reason, driving alone, being in any public place

3)While having S.P., do you experience other problems (shyness, low-confidence, other mental illnesses etc.)? What are they?
low confidence, depression

4)How are you dealing with social phobia (therapy, medicine, daily routine etc.)?
i'm currently going through therapy, on and off anti-depressants, i'm trying to practice cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy (forcing myself to do things that make me anxious).. also exercise, eating right and getting good sleep/having a good sleep schedule.

5)If you were rid of S.A. or S.P. what would you be doing?
i would be taking college classes, hanging out with my friends, attending big sporting events, visiting friends away at college, working, wow.. this list could go on forever!

OP: Name the most S.A. thing you did (this was a previous forum thread :p)
i guess let it take over and begin avoiding the outside world.. i've shut myself out and stopped living a life

OP: Tell a social phobic thing that you did in everyday life. I love to hear stories.
on days that i get out of the house (which i try to make an everyday thing), i experience intense anxiety. i honestly feel complete comfort and calm in my own home, i have no problems doing anything at home, answering/talking on the phone, talking online, no problems like that... but when i try to drive anywhere alone (even if i'm just going around the block and right back to my home) i get scared that i'll drive far and start to feel like i have to puke and i'll be too far away from home or i'll have to pull over to puke.. in any public place with other people around, i fear that i'll suddenly faint or puke or do something to draw attention to myself..

1. age 20.
2. being in public, i.e. bus rides, walking through campus, working in a library full of students, paranoia that most negative comments I hear aloud are about me
3. shyness, low confidence and esteem, passivity in groups, hesitancy in decisions especially for ones made for others
4. nothing yet
5. potlucking with friends, going out weekends instead of going home, much more than just school, work, and being secluded in my room

OP1. I have recently stopped doing everything social. I only interact with people that come to my house which is nice and rare. My s.a. gave me a panic attack at a party forcing me to leave abruptly while participating in a game and everyone noticed how fidgety and anxious I was, especially since I left without any word.

Op2. I always have headphones on to avoid interaction and when I see someone I know I'll pretend to be texting so that I can have my head down and avoid them

1)When did you realize you had social phobia?

I've always had it, I was diagnosed in 2002

2)What events/things occur in your life that make you anxious?

Wasps! arrgh! groups of people, one to one is not too bad for me

3)While having S.P., do you experience other problems (shyness, low-confidence, other mental illnesses etc.)? What are they?

panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, I'm not that shy, it's groups and men that make me anxious

4)How are you dealing with social phobia (therapy, medicine, daily routine etc.)?

exposure therapy and CBT

5)If you were rid of S.A. or S.P. what would you be doing?

not be scared of groups lol, I dunno, same as what I'm doing

)When did you realize you had social phobia?

I was diagnosed when I was 19 (1998), but I didn't really look into what it is or really give it much thought until this year (I'm 30 now).

2)What events/things occur in your life that make you anxious?

Having to interact with people I don't know in a social setting- work or routine things like interacting with cashiers/sales people doesn't bother me because it's structured/scripted. Anything involving using a telephone- some things I do no problem- like calling to order a pizza, but I still have to psyche myself up before I dial

3)While having S.P., do you experience other problems (shyness, low-confidence, other mental illnesses etc.)? What are they?

I've always been shy, even before the SP kicked in, and I've had bouts of depression as well.

4)How are you dealing with social phobia (therapy, medicine, daily routine etc.)?

I'm not doing anything currently, but I may seek some treatment once I have the money/insurance- probably the biggest part of SP that's affecting me is the phone phobia, otherwise it's just frustrating to have no friends/social life, but it's not completely detrimental.

5)If you were rid of S.A. or S.P. what would you be doing?

I would have friends to hang out with and do things with, otherwise my life might be more or less the same- although I might also have more courage to get involved in activities that aren't necessarily social, but that I have just avoided because I don't want to talk to or interact with new people.

OP: Name the most S.A. thing you did (this was a previous forum thread :p)

I'm not really sure, I don't remember anything that really stands out.

OP: Tell a social phobic thing that you did in everyday life. I love to hear stories.

I can't really think of anything for this either, except for the fact that I just don't go out and do things besides what I absolutely have to do, like going to work or the grocery store, or taking the kids to school. Outside of these activities, I'm kind of a recluse.

1)When did you realize you had social phobia?
- When I was about 17 1/2.

2)What events/things occur in your life that make you anxious?
Making small talk, performing an unfamiliar task in front of people, being around people, especially strangers, generally!

3)While having S.P., do you experience other problems (shyness, low-confidence, other mental illnesses etc.)? What are they?
Shyness, low self-esteem, body dysmorphic disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, idiopathic craniofacial erythema (excessive facial blushing), emetophobia (fear of vomiting)

4)How are you dealing with social phobia (therapy, medicine, daily routine etc.)?
Seeing a counsellor at university and commencing CBT with a private therapist soon, possibly commencing medication (antidepressants and tranquilisers if necessary) soon.

5)If you were rid of S.A. or S.P. what would you be doing?
Getting a job, getting my licence, having a boyfriend, going out with friends more, joining clubs and societies at university, volunteering

OP: Name the most S.A. thing you did (this was a previous forum thread :p)
I quit a job after some customers abused me because I wasn't doing the work properly BECAUSE I was too afraid to ask the other people for help and just couldn't develop a rapport with them at all. I went home crying and had a huge panic attack, then got my mum to call them and tell them I wasn't going back.

OP: Tell a social phobic thing that you did in everyday life. I love to hear stories.
Every morning, I make my breakfast (I keep all my dishes and food in my dorm room), then I have to listen at the door to make sure the kitchen's free so I can wash up. I wake up before 6 a.m. so that no-one else will be up yet, but sometimes they're still awake from the night before! I only wash my dishes once a day (I eat very little so it's not too bad, but I know that's pretty disgusting anyway ::(: ) Before using the bathroom, I listen at my door again. If someone comes in, my heart starts racing and, if my voice actually "works", I apologise for being in their way; I feel like I'm not entitled to be there. I have a small desk lamp in my room and never turn the huge fluorescent light so that people can tell I'm in my room. Obviously I always shut the door! I'm really sorry my dorm-mates have to have someone like me always being around being quiet and creepy.

Good luck with your assignment! :)
