Anyone Get Anxiety Wearing New Clothes?

Starting my first job after college in two days. Bought some business-y clothes that can be dressed up or down a tad. I feel reasonably happy with my clothes choices, but I can't shake the sense that I'll feel weird or fake or something wearing this classy things.

In particular I'm feeling weird about a black pea coat I bought. It's cold here so it makes perfect sense to buy something like that, but MAN I've never worn a coat that classy looking. I'm afraid I'll feel overdressed, snobby, or like a wannabe (as in like I'm faking it and wearing clothes that aren't really for me).

Anyone else feel weird wearing new clothes? I guess you just get used to it?

Yeah its why i dont dress up often. I feel like i should be "acting" a certain way if i dress too fancy. Plus it draws a lot of attention, or at least it feels like it does.

It kind of makes me think people will look and judge me in negative ways. On the other hand, I'm partially able to shake that off and just feel confident wearing those clothes, such as the cool black vest I wear at work.

I always feel weird when I'm out buying clothing. I cant help but feel like I'm trying to be someone who I'm not.

You'd stand out far more if you didnt assimilate to your environment.

I had a big issue with this after college. I hated the idea of assimilating and being a sheep. So i learned to dress up, while still keeping my own unique style.

Yeah I know how you feel, I find in my home area it's strange to dress as I do (most people wearing tracksuits etc) but then when I go to london it's completely normal. If you like something wear it! You'll be a better a person for it no matter what others might think :)

It was true for me a while back. I'd buy some very nice clothing and absolutely love them, but I'd never have the gut to wear them outside. I was so afraid that others would judge me as a show-off or a vain person. Now that I've been in the workforce for over 10 years, it's become a normal thing to dress professionally (especially when there's a conference or orientation going on). It's only a natural part of the business, you must dress to impress and to present yourself professionally. So I'd say, wear your new clothes any way. The more well put together and professional you look, the easier it is to gain others' trust (don't forget to also prove your ability with actions and results). Good luck at your job!

Ooh, I can sorta relate. I like to dress alternatively (goth-like fashion/makeup), and lately I've been really going all out with it. I have yet to receive any sort of rude comments from random people, but sometimes I get nervous that I look awkward, that my makeup doesn't look like it's applied right. Dressing in a way we're not used to can be a real bold move, and it takes many many times before we get used to it.

I actually like getting dressed up in new clothes.

Hie yer hence from me heath!

Ah do as well. My anxiety is the "Do ah wear this well? Does it look awrite? Ye sure folk will'nae think am gay wearin' a shirt that colour?"

^ Sorry, if that last bit offended anyone who here... Ah don't mean it a in derogatory manner. It's the first time ah wore a pink t-shirt ah kinda felt like Homer in that episode of The Simpsons where his white shirt accidentally comes out the wash dyed pink and he's forced to wear to and Mr Burns and Smither catch him on CCTV and Mr Burns has that classic line, after Smither identifies that it's Homer. Y'know the one ah mean...?

"Judging by his attire, he must be some sort of free-thinking anarchist"

I DO however, get anxiety when i wear no clothes down the street...

^ Awww, ya swine that ye are! There's an obvious, but hilarious pun here. Ah wus gonnae say it, but decided against it. :giggle: Nonetheless, thanks for the laugh, Pug. Much appreciated, given what ah've been dealing with lately.

In my third week of work now and I've actually gotten pretty much used to it. My new clothes are pretty much the same level of formality as that of the other people here.

The only thing that still really bugs me is the fit. Buying clothes really is a skill and it's not one that I've developed yet.

But yeah, not too self conscious recently.
