If anyone is bored or come across this rant, thank you for looking.

Does anyone know of the show UFO from the 1970's?

Imagine dating a man seriously for a year and whom you live with who claims to be this feminist. Who claims to love you for who you are and NOT because you look good. Who tells you he is a nice guy and respects women and people and worships the mind of Dahli Lama and Buddha.

Then imagine he pulls out his DVD collection of this show and you know he also has pictures of this woman character in his computer and he has watched it since age 10 and he is now 48.

It is the most degrading, misogynist, and unintelligent show I have ever seen. I tell him that and I'm called neurotic and much worse which I won't repeat.

I'd give anything to get a job and get away from him. I also have learned that all men lie and nice guys who appear to be nice aren't.

I think you're being immature. You're condemning him because of a TV show he enjoys? Why are you so mad over it?

Also, everyone lies, it's human nature, but tearing apart his character and every other man's character for that matter over this show is just stupid.

Yes that is it.

The hypocrisy and misogyny is through the roof. But somehow I am the neurotic b****.

It makes me uncomfortable to expose myself to programming that is either sexist or racist or anything oppressive. I am shocked that he isn't. You don't see what this reveals about a person?

i mean, i can understand how you're thinking.. but you may be going a little too far? i mean, seriously downgrading and thinking of him as less than human is just rude and uncalled for and reveals that you are putting too much effort and energy into judging someone based on their enjoyment of a tv show.

if it's that big of a deal to you, and you feel that because he watches the show that that means he's sexist or oppressive or whatever, then you should just part ways. don't dismember the guy or anything, and don't hate or degrade him just because he likes something that you don't, just part ways on a simple difference in opinions that you can't handle.

and anyway, watching that show doesn't make him those things, just as sitting in a garage doesn't make him a car.

Yup bit OTT there OP, I watched that when I was a nipper, it's retro I guess. Hey it's not like he's making you watch a porno with him

Though I don't trust anyman who say's he is 'nice' (I'll be the judge of that thx)

If he's been watching it since 10 then it probably has a big nostalgia factor for him. Also the 70s was a completely different era as far as sexism etc. That doesn't excuse it but it does put it in context. (LOL speaking of context maybe you should get on YouTube and watch some Frank Zappa.) The PC police was probably only in it's infancy then. I appreciate where you are coming from but it sounds like you have bigger issues with this guy than his taste in movies.

I agree that is a red flag.

Just imagine how you felt when you were betrayed. It feels like that. Like you feel so safe and loved and you know a man and then you realize it was an illusion and you are just in love with the IDEA of love.

But that show is misogynistic. I am very sensitive to it because of bad choices I've made, my degree in art history and women's studies, and I just want to see women portrayed differently. He knows all this about me. This is why it stings.

Wait? Frank Zappa. Please tell me what your implying about him???

Actually I do. This just affirmed my fears that he hates women.

seriously? if he lives with you and has been in a relationship with you, i highly doubt that he hates women. you should really think about loosening up a little. concluding that someone hates women from the fact that they watch some vintage tv show is extremely absurd and... crazy.

This is what i was thinking, too. From what I read, the show actually looked pretty progressive in its day - strong female leads and minorities in positions of authority, etc. It might be way out of date NOW, but in context of the time and at his age then, this show may very well have helped form your boyfriend's current feminist views.

It does sound like there might be more to your problems than just this one tv show.

I wasn't trying to say he hates women. I just mentioned Frank Zappa because when I first heard him I was pretty affronted by his humour but when I looked past that I saw what a creative artist he actually was.

I think sometimes it can be more restrictive to get caught up in what fits a narrow vision of what it means to be a 'feminist' than the actual sexism you are standing against.

Actually that does happen.

My last relationship was like that. He was physically and emtionally abusive. Plenty of men are misogynist and in relationships. Read just this example, educate. And being careful and aware is not crazy. That is an unkind thing to say.

Maybe you subconciously hate men and are projecting that on him? I'd discuss this with a professional maybe

so if i don't throw a fit and hate on a man because of his entertainment interests, i'll get beat up on??
i'm well aware of the signs and i'm careful enough to know when someone is dangerous.. i'm just saying that you're being extreme.
