Musical outlet

I find that when i feel that no one understands and i can't make sense of anything, music helps - and i'm sure i'm not the only one who feels the same.

I wish i never dropped out of piano/guitar classes as a kid. I was just far too shy to keep at it. But i know that if i did stay it would have been my outlet now. So i'm going to try and get back into it this year, take up lessons, either in piano or guitar..

I am envious and fascinated by anyone that can play, even if it's just to play for themselves all alone in their room. I'm sure there are a heap of musical SA-ers out there...somewhere...

Do you have a musical outlet, an instrument you play that helps you deal ? I don't mean to be so forward but if it's not too personal for anyone, would you mind sharing it with a stranger such as myself online ? Sometimes, talking it through doesn't cut it and belting it out in a tune is the only way to let some of it go and get it across..

I play piano, but I don't really use it as an outlet for my emotions. I'm not that deep. I want to learn guitar, preferably electric. 8)

I picked guitar about 30 years ago(and sound like I picked it up 3 years ago!) and it really is cheap therapy, even just picking away alone. Buy a decent guitar that you find EZ to play and you'll do it more often.

I play acoustic guitar, although I always play alone, i'm too shy to play for anyone else. I've been teaching myself for a couple years now, and it definately is a good outlet. I dropped out of lessons as a child as well, I was too shy and self-conscious to be taught how to play anything, I always doubted myself too much and for some reason couldn't concentrate as well with a teacher. I've always been better at learning things on my own, by reading or just figuring it out by myself. If you're interested though, you should try again. Try teaching yourself, you can take just about any lessons online these days. You can practice at your own pace, and take your time. It's important to have something like this to fall back on, to keep you motivated if you feel down or depressed. Music has always helped me through things, and being able to play is just awesome. Good luck.

I've been trying to teach myself how to play the piano for the past year. I actually had lessons when I was around 12, but for some reason that I can't recall (but now I regret) I stopped after a year.

Nonetheless, knowing enough to play certain melodies has helped me a little bit sometimes. It makes me feel better about myself. The only thing that brings me down is comparing myself with someone who has taken lessons for a number of years. That just makes me feel like I shouldn't even try...I'll never be that good.

I only show my family what I've learned. I don't think I could play for anyone else.

I've been playing the guitar for a little over a year now, and I've loved every minute of it. It really takes my mind off of my misery.

I've been playing guitar for almost 7 years and it is one of the few things that can calm me down. There's something about just strumming away that melts the anxiety.

You should learn to play any instrument, it really does help.

I make my own music. When I feel like it, I either start composing or simply play with the synthesizers' sounds. It's another, great world where we can rest for a while.

I play piano, and I don't really use it as an outlet to let out my emotions, but I always forget about my anxiety when I'm playing, so I guess it's a kind of escape for me. I love it!
But I won't play for anyone either, no way.

Heya Sparrow,

Could you suggest any good "tutor yourself" sites online for guitar ?
And do you post any of your music online for others to hear ? :)

^I have a few books that I use but i've only used a few online sites. I can't really recommend a good one but I suggest trying a search on Google for online guitar lessons and something will probably come up. Sometimes I look up chords or tabs to a song I really like and just play along, that's a good way to learn as well. I don't even think i'm that good, I just play to take my mind off things and it really helps. Just keep trying and stay motivated. I hope it works out for you. :)

I definitely play my piano/keyboard as an outlet. I took lessons for a few years and hated it, then when I started playing on my own and learning to play any song I wanted, I just loved it. Probably play everyday and it really helps to feel more relaxed and get the mind off whatever crap is going on.
