Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai, directed by Jim Jarmusch.

It doesn't have much to do with SA, but the title character seems isolated and lonely. The film itself is interesting and unique, with a tone that is both introspectively melancholy and quirkily funny at the same time.

THX 1138. Technically it doesn't involve social anxiety, but it involves being a misfit, the inability to work without drugs due to anxiety, secluding yourself away from the world because it's easier, and finally facing and defeating your own fear of harmless things.

The Glass Menagerie is an excellent but extremely depressing story involving SP or extreme shyness.

Wasn't she lobotomized into dullness (as was common in those days), rather than socially phobic? It's been more than a decade since I read it.

Anybody knows some good movies bout that? I would love to see a real serene and "quiet" movie about lonely people or something...
 stupid question,I know

First of all not a stupid question! That's always our way of self-deprecating though I know that well....

I'm grateful to have gotten so many movie ideas from everyone! One movie no one mentioned which really got me by surprise -- I was bawling when I saw it, and cried a lot the second time too -- was Parenthood. Steve Martin plays this over doting father who is overtrying to make his awkward son "fit in" -- Was expecting a funny Steve Martin movie but this is very different...I identified so much with it all, brought me back to my childhood....

The writer's sister was eventually, though he argued against it, because people thought it was kinder than letting her suffer from so much anxiety. Yuck.

"Stranger Than Fiction" is a great movie. The main character doesn't necessarily have SA, but he certainly has OCD and he lives a very isolated and structured life.

Now that you're mentioning Steve Martin movies, Simple Twist of Fate is a good one for this topic.

The movie "In The Realms of the Unreal" is a movie based on the life of artist Henry Darger. He worked as a janitor and spent most of his life isolated from people. When he died his work was found by his landlord. This is a documentary based on his art. It's a great movie.

A good director who usually touches on isolation and mental illness in his movies is Ingmar Bergman. One of his best movies in my opinion, is Wild Strawberries.

2 words: Taxi Driver. The best film ever. Period.

Amazing film. Robert DeNiro has a real talent for carrying off these sorts of roles. In the film 'Jackie Brown' he played a character called Lewis, and its probably my favourite bit of acting by any actor ever. I can really identify with it. He's not really socially anxious, just socially awkward. He says the wrong things, he acts weird and twitchy, you almost cringe at how uncomfortable he always looks.

An example would be where Samuel L Jackson's character calls him and asks 'What you doing?' and he replies 'Good, Good, I'm just hanging with Simone'

Everyone should watch this film. Best movie ever!

- Ben X. This one's not really about SA, but Asperger's Syndrome. Still an interesting and heart-breaking movie either way.
- All About Lily Chou Chou. This one's a Japanese movie released back in the year 2001. Not about SA too, but still worth checking out if you like electronica music and high school bullying themes.

I think I'm gonna check out Lars and the Real Girl since it seems so well-received here.

Sorry to bring back an old thread.

I recently saw a movie called Tokyo! which consists of three 30 minute stories; the last story was about a man who is a Hikikomori. From wiki, here is what a Hikikomori is:

a Japanese term to refer to the phenomenon of reclusive individuals who have chosen to withdraw from social life, often seeking extreme degrees of isolation and confinement because of various personal and social factors in their lives. The term hikikomori refers to both the sociological phenomenon in general as well as to individuals belonging to this societal group.

wikipedia also has a list of hikikomoris in pop culture if you are interested.

here is the synopsis of the film I pulled from a review on imdb.

Bong Joon-ho's the odd one out amongst the French filmmakers, but he holds his own with his story dealing with a reclusive hermit who boxes himself up at home, never to interact with any other humans, except when ordering pizza, and even then, avoids eye contact. He lives his life in an orderly fashion, and is a modern day junk collector who turns his trash into nicely stacked decorations within his household. Naturally things change when the status quo got challenged with a female pizza delivery-woman, and an earthquake which sends everything, including the girl, tumbling down.

It's a fun little love story, and a non-conventional one given the problems facing each character. In wanting to seek out his new found love, who never visited again, the hermit has got to challenge his fear of the big outside. The last memorable scene involving such a phobia, was with Holly Hunter's character in Copycat. Here, we play on the same fears, and I thought it worked in the plot really well, nevermind the almost farcical way the two would-be lovers connect. If only love were to be so easy as with a click of a button, for instant success. Not everything gets explained though, so you're likely to have to come up with your own conclusion with Bong's contribution.
