For some reason, I think of Ghost World, even though its not about lonely people.
Although, the two main characters are outsiders.

Dead Poets Society. One of the main characters (played by a young Ethan Hawke) seems to suffer from anxiety when confronted with public situations (like speaking up in class). It's a very inspiring movie that makes me wish I had a teacher like John Keating (played by Robin Williams).

I've never seen a movie that really directly related to people with social anxiety. Or at least one that centers on a person with it. I've begun to wonder if that's because lives like ours wouldn't make an interesting enough story to tell.
For social anxiety to be the 3rd largest mental health disorder it sure is rather ignored by literature and film. Perhaps I should try to change that someday.

yeh definately!
jonny depp has had a few roles like that playing the eccentric introvert ..

charlie and the chocolate factory
fear and loathing in las vegas
sweeny todd
sleepy hollow

the character in trainspotting played by ewan mcgregor is seen sitting in the club paranoid out of his mind and feeling uncomfortable ...

not as much in the mainstream thats for sure, but there have been a few, even the 1st spiderman peter parker plays a geeky outcast, and many of the american teen movies portrays the geek transformed apart of the in-crowd by the end ...

Adaptation is one... it's been a while since I've seen it though. I would have also said Punch Drunk Love. Jim Carey plays a fairly anxious sort of dude in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind... an awesome movie with great meaning. I love watching movies that I can relate to like this in someway... I'm going to go and think of some more and get back to you :D

Yes, but geeks and outcast aren't necessarily social phobic or severe introverts. In fact, in most movies they aren't. I mean we can relate to characters like Peter Parker in the fact that they're socially awkward (at least until they transform into the superheros we only wish we could become), but usually that's about as far as it goes.

Adaptation is a great movie. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is my favorite movie of all time. Carey was great in that movie.

Well... I could always identify with since I was quite young was Salina Kyle pre Catwoman in Batman Returns. Probably one of the most accurate SA characters I've seen portrayed on screen. However then she snaps and becomes Catwoman and that character is gone but I still love that performance.

I mean, even her talking to herself after feeling like an idiot "ugh... Stupid corndog. Corndog, corndog".

Mines a little different... "Stupid fucktard... idiot fucktard fucktard fucktard"

The anime series, Neon Genesis Evangelion and its movie The End of Evangelion deal with SA and depression. Or at least the main character seems to be dealing with both. Which is actually why I prefer the series ending over the movie. I could understand the ending of the series very much and didn't feel the movie was needed. But as concluding the actual sci-fi story and all, yes, the End of Evangelion was very much needed. But I still prefer the actual ending of the series.
