Just like riding a bike

Ok, so, I didn't learn to ride a bicycle until I was 43 years old, because I was afraid to make a fool of myself out in public trying to learn (never had a place big enough to try riding inside). And everyone who tried to "help" me just made it worse, because they were so critical or condescending (or so it seemed). That was until my girlfriend helped me a couple of years ago - she was so patient and non-judgmental - I will love her forever just for that.

Anyway.... Do the 57 bicycles I now have in my garage mean I might have OCD?

Just wondering....

If you had OCD, it seems it would be present in ways other than just you owning 57 bicycles. Plus, OCD typically shows up much earlier in life.

I'm trying to ride a bike now and I'm 17 I feel so embarassed but it's something I need to achieve. Just a little step I can take to improve my life!

What finally made a difference for me was having the help of someone I really trusted - didn't have my guard up. Just make it fun/silly, focus on what they're telling you and forget about what you're doing.

Being out in public alone trying to do something....it always feels like all eyes are on me, but if I'm with somebody, I can focus on them, and I forget about being self-conscious.

Similar situation to why I can't yet swim, having a pool full of kids and teenagers watch me splash about frantically trying to stay afloat is a lovely thought.

Is it hard learning to ride a bike? I love cycling and sometimes wonder if its difficult learning since it seems almost like second nature.
57 bikes though lol damn. Thats like £15,000+

Well I'm actually learning to do it by myself, there isn't really anyone I trust or anyone that wants to do it with me, but I'm okay with that.

I'm now able to pedal straight, my problem is turning but within a few days I think I'll achieve what I set out to do!

What was hard was getting over the fear of screwing it up and looking like an idiot in front of everyone watching me (which I assumed was the entire world).

Now that I've been riding a couple years I wonder what was so freakin' hard about it all my life.

Hey, if you send me 15,000 lbs - I'll send you the bikes. I picked up most of them for free just lying by the curb. I don't think anyone is looking for them, but I'll grind off the serial numbers just to make sure.

Awesome! Keep at it! Have fun!

Haha sorry to bring this thread back from the dead but I just wanted to update on what I said previously, I can now ride a bike almost perfectly now! After practising religiously in my garden for many days I wanted to see how I got on on more "open" ground, as my garden is very small. I woke up at 4AM today (So there wouldnt be any cars) and took it to this abandoned road and I rode around

I felt great haha because it was something I could never do for years as I was so unmotivated and embarrassed. But now I alone have accomplished something! All I needed was persistance!

Man this makes me happy. Shame I couldnt of seen your face, I bet you were like a little kid :D

I've recently started swimming every week. Started off I could only do the breaststroke. Weeks of practising when the pool was empty and now Hooray. My freestyle/backstroke is coming on great. Feels awesome to let go of my inhibitions, I sometimes just swim in doggie paddle for the craic.
Signing up with a swimming group that teaches for triathlons.

coyote i'm in the same boat as you only i'm in limbo where i'm in my 20's and i don't want to be seen in public riding a bike, as silly as that seems i haven't ridden a bike since my teens. The problem with me is riding near a busy road i tend to get nervous that everyone is watching me so instead of confidentally crossing a road and jumping my front wheel up over the gutter onto the footpath i become a bit shakey so i have to actually get off the bike and walk the bike across, so because of these insecurities i don't ride at all.

i dont think you have OCD, i just think you enjoy collecting.
