Job references

how do you deal with job references?
i don't remember half the names of people i've worked with in the past, barely even interacted with anyone, and haven't worked any place more than a year.
i've been working at home for a while now, but need something that pays better and is more stable, but i don't know who to use as a reference, as it's been two years since i've worked anywhere with people.
not quite sure what to do >_<

It's not easy, simply because office politics and egos can get in the way of happily asking for someone to be a referee in that you may not always have developed a strong tie with them. However, you as an employee have the right to ask former bosses if they can help you out and often they will happily agree.

But asking is not easy if you find your former bosses to be intimidating and unapproachable.

The last time I rang former bosses I drank some wine to relax before calling which really helped, not that I advise people to do that, but if you can find a way to relax before calling then that helps.

make up a fake person and then list their phone number as your home phone # (not cell phone number) and then just answer the home phone with a british accent, pretending to be said fictional person.

and I was thinking it was a good idea.

I got an interview somehow for Friday and I put down "sorry I have no references." Not for any higher up job but still. I was sort of surprised.

Probably not a good idea to say you have no one though hahaha.

If I really want to put references I put my sisters. They have different last names than me.

I called the contact and asked if I could use them as a reference in my resume. If they didn't pick up I'd e-mail. If they didn't email I would just write that I worked there and couldn't get a hold of them.

I just realized what a funny movie idea that would be. like if someone did that but then employees wanted to meet this mysterious reference ..it would be like Mrs.Doubtfire in a way.
