Yes, this is something that frustrates me also. I tend to avoid any shows about aliens, ghosts, mythical creatures and conspiracies. These shows are usually interview/narrative heavy, so they're easy to avoid.

I'm much more fond of shows that actually teach practical things and present fact checkable stuff. Like bush craft show with Ray Mears/Les Stroud, or shows like Dirty Jobs which often are convincingly honest.

My TV stays on Syfy (science fiction) most of the time because I like mysterious things and I'm very into Sci-fi, but I like the fact that these things are peoples imaginations. It's escaping from reality.

I feel the same way though because I know these shows are actually trying to pass themselves off as real and not even a mockumentary. Back to the question, no I don't TV is good (overall), but it can be a good source of entertainment.

Television is so outdated. Stuff like Netflix are far superior: you watch what you want, when you want and all this without any advertisements.

Come on now, shows like Mythbusters are just great, both for entertainment goals and for learning new things. So you really can't say that TV as a whole makes people dumb, it's not all black and white like that.

HOWEVER, it is extremely important to make use of a critical mind at all times. If you are watching a documentary making some tremendous claims, you might want to do some research on the net to see if it is controversial information. If it is, you then have to inform yourself on the controversy, analyse both sides of the spectrum and make up your own opinion on the subject.

Isn't it great that we have access to thousands of magical tubes that link us with information from all around the Earth :D

The only problem with services like NetFLIX is that they're regionally/nationally restricted.

My favorite shows are all either British, Australian, American or Canadian. Most of which initially restricted by various laws. Making timely viewing these shows legally extremely difficult sometimes. If I know about a show I'm hardly going to wait 3 years waiting for syndication.

I'd love for those services to become globally available, with fast content from all over the world.

Oh me too, I love science fiction, but mostly openly fictional kind. Shows like Battlestar Galactica and so forth. I also like documentaries about space, but I can't help but feel they take us for a loop sometimes due to it being difficult to fact check.

The lack of easy to find source and direct social interaction with other viewers makes it difficult to check its credibility. It's a shame.

I actually follow the middle-ground with TV, some days not watching any at all, others watching a few hours .. but since you didn't provide that choice in the poll, i selected the 2nd option.

It can be really grate (eg really good film or program). But the tv stations have to earn money to survive, hence the ad, which they try to milk as much custom from as humanly possble, but thats business - often a purely revenue-based entity, not out to consider peoples feelings, only to make the mighty buck, the first priority. True, some of the advertisng may be bordering on the line of decency/morals/tastefulness/etc, which is why i often mute the tv during ads, so that i dont receive the indended emotional/sublimnal effects the tv station intends. I probably should listen to the ads, as thats part of the deal with tv, allows me to watch free tv, but i just dont want to, so i cheat by muting the tv.

Same with supermarkets & other shops. They control us with product placements, "special" signs, music they play. It's like if you're in their space, then you should be their slaves, they should "own" your soul while in that space. Which is why i often wera sunnies & music/headphones in supermarket, to at least be in control of the brightness/audio - they can have the visual/olfactory control. I understand that they have a "need" to maximise their revenue, as the more money they bring in, the more the top-dogs of those businesses receive, and so they & their families personally are happier, and the business stays thriving, keeping others employed. The rat-race isn't all about greed & manipulation .. i'm sure it's barely 85% (lol)

no, watching television will just make you feel inadequate

that's their whole strategy - to make you think you're missing something in your life because you're not as "whatever" as the characters portrayed

but, amazingly, they have just the product you need to purchase to make your life complete...

and they tell you this over and over every fifteen minutes for how many hours a day for how many years?

do yourself a favor and drop an anvil on your television if you want to work on your self-esteem

Choose what to watch on tv, dont sit mindlessly in front of it, limit the total time spent viewing, if you're watching commercial tv, get up and do something useful during every 3 minute ad break. Use it for learning as well as entertainment.

Today, it's nice to have an uplifting feel of false happiness
Nowadays i am trying to "keep it real" more. To try get down to the hard nitty-grity facts of life. But tv does gives me a break from the at-times-depressing reality of [my] life. Transports me to the better place, place where i have company/friends, am not alone, etc.

As a student, a lot of us avoided TV. Life was about people, out every night, enjoying everything
Speak for yourself (!?)

But whether TV, games or other fantasy or not, aint't the biggest fantasy/illusion being created 24/7 in our minds??? (illusion of our lives here on earth)

That is definitely a big inconvenience for many people. However, there is a way to overcome this issue. I am Canadian and I am able to watch the ''American version'' of Netflix using Hotspot Shield. It's totally free, safe and easy to use. Just google it, download it, run it, and the next time you will connect to Netflix, all the American variety of shows and movies will be available to you.

:D

(Note that this only works on your computer, not on your PS3 or such)

Huh, that's awesome. I'll give it a go, thanks! ;D

EDIT:

Ah no, wait. Now I remember what the problem was. The problem was in payment, not so much streaming. You have to pay either through credit card or PayPal, I don't have a credit card I do have a PayPal account, the problem is that it requires a PayPal account located in the US.

Ah well, I'll just have to wait then. Thanks for the suggestion anyway. ;3

Its great for us , but let it not be the only thing you do and make a whole bunch of time for. Once in awhile is okay. I ll devote the whole day to Tv but that's not so often.

quite surprised by a +ve reaction! Thanx 4 agreeing. I see quite a big life-wide decision to say no to the normal. There is a good book called 'just say no to Microsoft'. I spent too much of my early life playing computer games in the 1980s. Some things are addictive - like choc & sweets to kids, and Irn bru to me. I'd rather look out of the window when it's raining than a make-believe world of TV. Uh - the window is bigger than the screen. More drama on a yacht in a storm, or snowboarding. And through the windscreen from the car cockpit

All BBC content in the UK has been to encourage you to laugh and giggle, kiss and smile, from childhood onward ::p:

I only watch a few shows and sometimes I'll catch the news to see the weather.... but normally no tv for me. I find it boring. However I do sit online more than I should, esp during these cold and icky winter/fall months.... but I'd rather be outside anytime or anyday

I never liked TV, I think I even grew allergic toward it. I think I am somehow different to other people, for example my cousins once they set their eyes on the screen, it gets them riveted no matter what´s on. They have always been like hypnotized by TV, while I was bored like hell. Why is this??

I don´t mind watching news, some documentaries or something interesting, but most often there is crap...

I only ever watch shows online. Why sit around all day, flicking through things you didn't really want to watch in the first place? Plus, there's no adverts either :D

I don't really watch many shows though and when I do, I usually blow through an entire season in a couple of days, then have nothing to watch the next day.

I would much rather be outside and like Mike, I really enjoy the rain (and Irn Bru, haha) Unfortunately, wanting to do things outside usually means doing them on my own, as most people don't seem to want to go for a walk when it's raining.

I love telly. Telly has taught me so much :D Tv is an old old friend

Having said that I don't currently have tv o_O (says Jewel rocking in corner)

haha you sound like me! It has also taught me a lot. Whenever me and my sister watch jeopardy or do some trivia game and I get a question right, she's always like "How'd you know that?!" And I always says "I either learned it from the t.v or the internet or dad lol" So for me television has been educational and something to take my mind off things.

I won't lie and say that somethings on t.v don't make me feel inferior and bad about myself but not all of t.v is like that at least not what I watch. For me it's something to get into and its "my thing" you know? That and it does take my mind off things and makes me happy. There's a lot of bad stuff on t.v but also a lot of good stuff too, you just gotta find the right stuff to watch cause not everything is jersey shore and crap like that.

Add on of my post: That and if you join a fandom of a show its a great way to make friends through that fandom and it also gives you something to talk about with strangers at a public place even if you don't know if they like it too.
