Is it just me or...?

Well, basically every person I`ve encountered in my country is either superficial, untrustworthy, a dick or all of them (lol). Because of this I tend to believe that my country is full of superficiality, and of stupid people who look down on others and exchange gossip. I know my opinion may be inaccurate , but I'm only talking from my experience. At first, I thought that ' hey.this may be just a phase.'. Unfortunately, the adults are the same way maybe worse. So, is it just my country succumbing to the dark gods and into oblivion , or is it the same everywhere?
Cause in this kind of enviroment where people have forgotten about morality and only care for their own good , it's very hard for people with SA(like us) to overcome our problem and blend into this world.

Well, I heard that California and LA are worse than my country :) Never been there, so don't know...
I've read some bad things about Romania in the magazines too, dunno...

In many ex-communist/ex-socialist countries old values/belief systems have been replaced with materialism and consumerism of its worst.. Partly it's so in our country too.. But there are still good people here.. It depends who you know and talk to... You can find good people when volunteering, in non-profits, charities or church groups etc. Maybe you can start looking for people who are trying to make a difference? :)

If you`ve heard about my country that the government wastes money when we need it more than ever, politicians have villas and flashy cars built on taxpayers money , the hospitals are utterly miserable with rusty equipments where people are often mistreated, the doctors and professors earn less than 500 euros then what you`ve read is correct. I mean it's the 21st century and this country doesn't have a f**ing highway.

On topic now: Well, I know there are some people with good intentions but searching them is like looking for a needle in a haystack

I believe that is often the case with not so advanced countries, where wealth is in the hands of few (including politicians) while the rest suffer as minions.

Look at China, it's a so called communist state, but run more like a fascist one, and it's capitalist at an astonishing rate. From experience I can tell you that corruption, materialism and superficiality are ripe on every level of society. Why? It's the culture. Society encourages consumption, status and wealth accummulation. Society does not cater for the vulnerable and less well off. There is a very narrow minded view of life in China, on the whole.

I think this phenomenon is prolific in developing and third world nations. There are still people like that in advanced, more tolerant nationns, of course, but on a lesser scale. Society in the UK is a dichotomy of low, superficial culture at one end, and intellectual, social and political activism at the other end. In a nation where multicultrualism is accepted and (supposedly) celebrated, tolerance and political correctness has come a long way. Can you imagine Romania opening it's doors to the world in a mass immigration drive, having people of all ethnicities going there to live and work? I don't know of course, but I have a suspicion that it's going to be tough on the integration.

About the statement that SA sufferers have less support, that is true. Mental illness is swept under the carpet, probably disability in general as well. That again comes from the lack of tolerance and education that a multicultural, advanced nation would advocate.

My mother is from Romania and I visited there last year and I'll tell you now that I've never met nicer people. Maybe in Bucharest they're rude but everywhere else I felt as if I was put on a pedestal which I'm TOTALLY not used to.

maybe they really like Americans? I don't know..

Cynic, a poster in these forums uses the quote, "Hell is other people." I don't agree with this quote 100% of course, but the quote does have some truth to it. I'd say hell can be certain other people. There are a lot of rude, superficial, and untrustworthy people everywhere on the planet, not just it Romania. I guess we should be happy that there are enough decent people on earth to balance things out a little bit. The world and the people in it will always be imperfect, that's just the way things are.

Well, what I read was about the gypsies and homeless kids, sleeping in the streets or underground and being exploited and hungry and sniffing glue etc. Poor kids... My heart really went out to them, I saw photos too.. This was a few years ago, I don't know if it's any better now...?

The government - I think many governments and political and/or capitalistic 'tycoons' worldwide just want to get the money and don't care about others.. That is very short-term short-sighted thinking.. In the end, we are one planet, one people, one human race... How can they think of being happy if others are miserable?

In our country, there have been 'wild privatizations' too, big companies have been destroyed and bought or sold cheaply, or totally destroyed and people put out of work... The system is probably still a bit better, as at least we don't have children in the streets (that I would know of), they can get adopted or get foster parents.. and the hospitals are probably better, though still overcrowded, not enough is done on prevention of health problems..

Transitions from one system to another can be difficult, many 'unlawful' or plain 'wrong' things can happen inbetween.. (especially when old laws and values no longer apply, new ones aren't here yet...)

Another article about Romania said people were very kind and hospitable too.. Maybe in the provinces more, and maybe more to foreigners/tourists indeed? You could sleep at people's places for cheap and get food cheaply..

Remember where paychecks are big, prices are high too.. London is very expensive to live in, some other big cities or 'rich' countries too..

X-rated, are you black or Caucasian? Looking at your avatar.. Just curious, cause maybe people there aren't used so much to non-white people? Here, black or multicultural people are a rarity too... Some people are nice to them, some got married here and have good lives, a few have been beaten up in the capitol too.. (there are some 'right wing' extremists) So it really depends on the people..

I have been worried about things worldwide too... Like in Egypt, Asia, and Africa, and elsewhere..
Sometimes it's better to not watch the news so much, sometimes it's difficult not to...

@social_monstrosity I'm not saying that all people are bad etc. I was saying that from MY EXPERIENCE, most people I`ve encountered are superficial dumb gossiping pricks. I'm not disagreeing that there aren't many good people but so far i`ve been unfortunate and haven't met them. And , be careful, the APPEARANCE may be VERY diffenrent from the ESSENCE
@feathers
The stories you`ve read about gypsies are true, though on a not so bigger scale you're probably imagining.
I don't believe that the greedy government is at the root of this mentality, I think that it's the result of it. Anyway as i stated above I didn't say there aren't good people, I`ve just never had the luck to cross path with them. I mean, this f**ing society it's so annoying. You always have to blend in,be like an average joe, if you're different than BAM!, you become an outcast. That`s what I was trying to say by the state of superficiality: if you're different, instead of encouraging to do what you like, you're often labeled as a wierdo. I know that isn't just in my country ,but, oh well, i guess that this is the world we live.
Almost forgot, I'm white. The black guy from my avatar is a soccer player(wish i was him though :)) ).

Thanks for all your help:)

The latter. What you describe about Romania is very true here in the UK too.

Yeah, America probably is worse, and followed by any country that pursues and practices American values. What country are you in Feathers?

Hmm, I wouldn't say any country is worse than another in all aspects.. we've had a similar discussion on the forum, started by ShyKiwi (he was wondering whether to move elsewhere, and where :))
Some countries may have more problems in certain areas, but also more opportunities... and all have some wonderful people and events and places too..

I'm in one of the 'new' ex-communist/socialist countries going into 'turbo capitalism' with great speed.. more details via PM if really interested :) A friend's husband who is American said that our country is going 'the US way' very very quickly, much quicker than he expected... he used the concept of 'mall-ization' malls and supermarkets being built everywhere all over our small tiny land.. (which *is* quite concerning, yup..)

X-rated, are you spiritual/religious, or not at all? Many people here are atheistic too, and they may have fallen into the 'materialism' trap.. some people who are more spiritual/religious have found others who think in 'non-materialistic' ways at church or in yoga groups etc. Also artsy/crafty people, poetry/literature or eco clubs, mountaneering/hiking societies or such... depending on your interests a bit..

I saw a good video the other day that reminded me of this thread:
YouTube - Riz Khan - Are we living in the end times?
I don't know if what he suggests as a possible 'solution' would be right - there are probably a number of 'small' personal grassroots and systemic solutions.. for the environmental and other problems..
You must know that where problems are bigger (eg in the US) there are also more people already aware of problems and working for better solutions, eg for more environmentally friendly living...
