Is college education worth it?

If I had to pay off $40000 in college debt, I'd go insane. What if you had to move across the country to get a job or stay where you are, get a low paying job and have all that debt?

College should be free for everyone. Only reason it isn't is because the ruling class wants an ignorant and obedient work force. At least, that's what I learned about in sociology lol.

I want to take mechanical engineering. What's that like?

Haha I'm your perfect example - or nearly so.

I've got about 25k in student loan debt. I'm stuck in a town with a low paying job. Am I going insane? Things are beginning to fall apart, that's for sure.

Its worth if you find something you want to do,I do want to learn and teach if possible or find some area I like to work,I will possibly start studying again now when I am just about to return to my home country,if that doesnt matter and you accept any work or you dont need to like your job much it isnt worth.

I don´t know if its worth it or not. Depends on the person. Many people with degrees never get jobs, or if they get a job it´s not because of that degree/education. I think everywhere we go is a learning experience, a necessary step on the way, whether its education or not education.
I personally can´t finish what I started in university, because it was all wrong for me to study academically, I have little to none interest or discipline.. and oh yeah also, I can´t face all the social stuff, going to classes & people on campus..

I have 2 college degrees and I would say it was not worth it. If you have to pay for it with loans, you set yourself up for pratical slavery the rest of your life. I never used my degrees for anything. I think the people who do well with their degree are the exact same people who would do well not having a degree - The highly motivated, connection orriented people.

I think it's sort of sad the way education is nowadays; I once heard someone mention that students don't go to college to 'contemplate the heavenly spheres' anymore; they just go because they think a BA will help them get a job. I agree with that sentiment.

What happened to specialized education? I mean c'mon - a bachelor's degree isn't realistically required to perform most jobs adequately.

There is a large enough reserve of college grads for employers to be able to require a degree for positions that don't need them. They can pick from a better candidate base and get away with it, so to speak.

Yes absolutely worth it! But not because I'm making good money- BS psychology. My sister (an extrovert with no understanding of social anxiety) just graduated with her bachelors in advertising & is working as an assistant account executive for $32,000/year. For me it's worth it because no one can take away your education. Although I'm still struggling with SA & I still lack social/relationship experience, going to college has really helped me develop skills. As for $, somebody else here already mentioned you can't make any in Psych w/out a Masters or better yet PhD. But I don't regret choosing this major.

Yes. A degree in anything will open doors. Technical degrees are even more important. It also just nice to be educated.

Also, it's a good for socialization, which most of us here need.

I miss college.

Unless you spend all your free time playing your guitar alone in your dorm room. ::eek::

My parents have three children: a college dropout, a history major, and a chemical engineering major with a master's degree. Currently one of us is employed, and that's after being out of work for 2 years. And he really doesn't need two degrees to monitor and maintain sensors for the water department.

I don't think anyone has ever regretted getting a college degree. Whereas tons of people regret not getting one.

But anyway, yes, I think it's worth it. It gives you a huge advantage in getting a job as well as being a great opportunity to just figure things out.

Most important for our purposes, it's an invaluable opportunity to practice socializing and to make friends. It's a lot harder after college, when you're no longer surrounded by 1000s of open-minded people the same age as you, all in the same boat. I regret wasting my college years hiding alone in my dorm room.
