Sorry to put yet another off topic up, but you guys seem smart enough...

what media player would you recommend (free please) for my computer? I have used all the standards: divx, real player, VLC, quicktime...and I went to download.com and a couple other places to see what they have - realplayer was generally the top one.

I watch a lot of movies on my computer (if they're dvd, it's not an issue) but when they are from other sources :giggle: I sometimes have to switch between all I have which is ridiculous cuz they seem to bog down my system. I'd like to get rid of them and just have one to play all formats across the board.

Any recommendation would be appreciated

Many thanks.

I used to use Windows MP Classic with K-lite Codec Pack, now I am using VLC. From my experience, at least with good media players, you only need one. If you run into something you can't play, all you need to do is Google the needed codec for your player (sometimes you'll need something specific, to install it in a way that works for your player), and you're good to go.

For audio I have used Foobar2000 for years.

CCCP with Media Player Classic.

CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack

Make sure you uninstall any other players (except Windows Media Player of course) and codecs before you install this.

My personal instructions to have a perfect setup:

1. Install CCCP. Choose the Full Installation and uncheck "Associate any unassociated extensions with MPC-HC."

2. Choose to open the settings at the end and uncheck H.264/AVC. Also uncheck both of the FFDShow Tray Icons. Finally, check "LAV Video" under Alternative H.264 Decoders.

Click Next, choose to open files with Media Player Classic and check the icons for all. Finally, uncheck "Show Tray Icon" under Haali Media Splitter. Click on Apply.

7. From the Start menu, go to Combined Community Codec Pack, open Media Player Classic. Go to View => Options and do the following:

Player => Formats: Choose the formats you wanna use MPC with. Do not touch the following:

AVI
Matroska
MP4
Ogg Media
Matroska audio

If they are unchecked or have a pale gray check, it's okay, just do not touch them. As for the others, I personally check the following:

MPEG
DVD-Video
Flash Video
Windows Media Video
Other
AC-3/DTS
FLAC
MPEG-4 Audio
Ogg Vorbis

Player => Logo: Choose your desired logo.
Playback: Check "Rewind when done playing".

ONLY CHANGE THE SETTING BELOW IF YOU HAVE AT LEAST 2 GB OF RAM.

Playback => Output: Choose Haali Renderer (Takes more memory but will let you take screenshots).

Apply and you're done!
