Foods that can lift depression/anxiety

I've always suspected mental health wasn't only a mental thing, but also a physiological thing. I find I'm at my best mentally when I eat well. Make sure we all get the proper vitamins, minerals and acids. It's good to remind ourselves of this, because when we're under stress, eating well often gets put on the backburner and thus a vicious cycle comes in existence.

Just wanted to post some useful links in relation to food:

Anyone got any more useful tips/links?

^ Tyrosine is a great one! It really can help focus and concentration, as well as wrestless leg syndrome, and even self-image. I took L-tyrosine for a few months, but it is more effective to just eat high-protein high quality amino acid food.

I have so much to add to this from too much time doing research...

B 12 being most important. And Folate. This doesn't say much, but i'm too lazy to find the other studies,

Taking B12 and folic acid (which ideally should be folate) have done the most ( and most immediately )for my depression out of any other supplement or medication, and I've been through fish oil, vitamin D, chromium, chlorella, B6, B3, B5 (seperately) and a B complex, zinc, herb like rhodiola, st johns wort, damiana, maca, L-dopa, L-tyroine, 5htp, L-glutamine, magnesium, zoloft, prozac, iron, ugh so much wasted money, but i guess all those purchases were worth it to realize that I had a B12 and folate deficiency causing anemia and somehow depression related to my low motivation and energy.

speaking of which.. I ran out of folic acid a few weeks ago and have felt a decline in energy... Time to pick me up some o' those tomorrow methinks..

I find that making sandwhiches with butter that contains Omega 3 really helps with my mental well being and mood. It sounds a bit silly.

I've had huge problems with sleep, daytime fatigue, trouble concentrating, a racing mind, anxiety and all of this feeds the depression. I really let my eating habits slide. I often just bought ready made salads or microwave foods instead of cooking myself, and then retreated back into my room (because of roommates/social anxiety). I need to eat way more Broccoli, spinach and other vegetables. The cooking itself also gives me confidence for some reason.

Thanks for your contributions guys. I'm really forgetful when it comes to good foods and the stuff we need so this helps a lot.

Absolutely man, Hemp oil works wonders. I would suggest that you guys try it out. Chalked full of amino acids. Gives you an instant mood boost, clarity of thought, and is great for your long term health. Good stuff! Get the cold pressed organic stuff if your interested.

An edit to add : Mucuna pruriens is a 'velvet bean' that you can buy in powder form. It contains 5-hydroxytryptamine which is essentially serotonin. Excellent for a natural, organic mood stabilizer. I would really suggest that too.

I was going to say Omega 3s as well. Almonds are good. Whey in orange juice is a favorite of mine. The amino acids in them are really revitalizing and calming. And this isn't for everybody, but coffee has a pretty good soothing effect on me too. I think there might be some basis for it in anxiety, and some people I know have noted it too, but it may just be a personal thing.

Hemp oil works wonders

I looked around a bit and I don't think they sell that in shops here in the Netherlands. You can buy weed but not hemp oil.

I may order it in a webshop but that is expensive.

I guess any food you enjoy or that reminds you on happy things can improve your mood. Unless that food is so unhealthy, that you'll have a bad conscience for eating it.
