Confidence in difficult situations

Yesterday, while I was working at the library, there were some teens causing disruptions. I was the closest employee to them, but lacked the self-confidence to approach them. Two librarians (including the branch manager) approached the teens and dealt with the situation.
I realize that they have more experience with these things, but I wish that I had the guts to do something, especially since I'd like to be considered for positions requiring more responsibility.
I think the only way to gain confidence in these situations is to experience them for myself, but I don't know how to approach this. Any ideas?

Hmm...

Perhaps it's a stupid idea, but how about imagining scenarios like this and practicing? If it happens for real, you'd know what to do then. What do you think?

Put on a brave face and imagine having confidence-become zen-like in your approach to these bastards hehe sorry But I also was in the exact same situation at a library job but it was porn and the preachers son so I had to deal with it and it was Not pleasant. You Have to deal or someone else will and like you said you are going to get passed-over by someone who can so why let that happen, when you know you can do it as well as anyone. Good luck!

It's unpleasant to deal with negative situations but someone's got to do it. The trick is to be assertive without without angering people; don't raise your voice and don't show your anger. Be reasonable with them and they will understand and respect your decision even though they might not like it. And try to end with something positive, like a thank you or a smile.

I'd have a difficult time with this as well. I hate confrontations. The advice others have given here is good though. It is a good idea not to let your emotions show, to approach the situation in a calm, professional manner. How did the librarians deal with the situation? Oh, I wouldn't want to deal with teens x_x :p But your job sounds cool! A library. Awesome place :)
