The world. I find it depressing. Literally, the world.

Worldometers - real time world statistics

Real time counts of what's going on in the world.

Hectares of forest lost this year: 84,248.
People who died of hunger today: 84,248
Number of people infected with HIV/AIDS: 31,914,742
Species that went extinct this year: 84,248.

By the time you read this, the numbers will probably have gone up.

It's the environmental stuff that depresses me the most, I think. We're mucking up everything, and so many people think that we humans are just too small to have a serious effect on something as big as the earth.

The number 84,248 seems spookily significant.

I think the "Births Today" and "Deaths Today" is pretty scary. They're both going up pretty fast, but guess which one is going up the fastest. ::(:

Oops. Nothing significant about that. I looked again and the forest loss number is going up so quickly it's difficult to cut and paste, so I must have pasted the same number twice.

A second ago it was actually 6,837,878. Which isn't exactly less depressing than 84,248.

Eh, I don't see the human species being around that much longer if it makes you feel better. Then something else will probably take over. Compared to the age of the planet we've only been here for like a second and we've already screwed up this much. So it doesn't give me confidence that we'll beat the dinosaurs and rule the Earth for a couple a hundred million years.

That is hella depressing and I get so angry when people just ignore it all like we make no impact either way. People just pop out kids they can't care for, rape the world of its resources and kill each other.

::(: ::(: ::(: humans are TOO SMALL??? Are you freaking kidding me?? Who says that? I hate mankind so much that "people who died of hunger" makes me a bit relieved that at least there are less of us to harm the earth.. . But population is most of the problem in the first place! These diseases.. they might be balance in disguise, here to help the planet out a bit from the horrible parasite that is man.
..am I heartless? Or has empathy, originally the symbol of human kindness, back stabbed us?

This is why i'm moving to an eco-village, It's the best one can do, to live and promote life without further influence on the earth and to escape the horrible horrible knowledge of our destructive power...just gah!

It doesn't depress me too bad. But before somebody jumps my throat, I DO NOT mean that in a mean way. It's always sad when people die of starvation, or polluted waters. But remember that the world is a colossally big place. Internet, air planes, and TV make it look small, but make no mistake, it's bigger then most comprehend. People die, it has been happening for thousands of years.. It's just that our noses are now pressed against it at all times.

Not to mention that you shouldn't just believe what these numbers tell you. I'm not denying that there are allot of bad things going on in this world, but always ask questions. No matter how seemingly reliable the source is.

hhmm good points. There's still a lot of wild untouched land left. Many of those extinct species could be hiding out.. we don't own the world and we can't see everything. Makes the blow a little softer :) (I take these environmental things really heavily so that was very helpful :))

Specifically, I was thinking of when a family member told me that global warming is nothing more than a natural cycle, and that people don't have the power to affect global climate any more than ants do. Which was probably paraphrasing FOX.

I sat there for a while, just watching the population counter. You can see it go back a notch now and then, when the number of deaths momentarily outweighs the births, but overall, disease and famine and the like are quite ineffective. For a long while now, we have been beyond any natural population control mechanisms.

That's the thing, I didn't just post this without any research into my sources. The numbers are as accurate as can be measured (which is surprisingly well).

If you look at the world population from the past then look at it now you will realize you are kidding yourself about there not being that large a population.

Lots of wide open spaces? About 400 years ago the entire USA was a wide open space...

Ineffective..for now. But, with how we're preventing man from adapting to all diseases with vaccinations and other "cures", there will be one eventually that we cannot hide from... we as a species are very vulnerable thanks to our reliance on our "advancements" and invetions. I hope that global warming and the predicted increase of natural disasters will take that role. It's random, at least. I just hope that we can learn to control our population before we sacrifice everything. Earthquakes, for instance, you'd think they'd only damage the human population seeing that we've put ourselves in death traps (houses). I don't really know what i'm saying anymore  Has anybody watched that show "Life After Humans" on the history channel? It's very reassuring to know that the earth will repair itself, however slowly, as soon as we're gone lol.... although I find the show rather phony, I'd like to believe it anyways.

Yea...it is pretty depressing.

We still need to live our lives though. Maybe do our part to help too.

I think Agent Smith said it best:
I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.

None of that horrible stuff is happening around here.

Everyone is rich and happy. No yachts have sunk in awhile.

I suppose that some day, all the strife may creep northward toward my trouble-free peninsula.

*sigh*

That's why I'm collecting guns.
