The most noticeable side effect was myoclonus—violent jerking of my arms and legs. It usually happened when I was trying to go to sleep at night, but it could also be triggered in other situations by stress or alcohol. I found that I was able to suppress the movement, but doing so was extremely unpleasant—a sort of painless agony, if that makes any sense. On one occasion, I actually begged my girlfriend at the time to cut my leg off so it would stop jumping around by itself. A small dose of clonazepam helped, but failed to fix the problem entirely.
