@ MR. Wonderful: I don't remember his exact words, but he did ask me why I was quiet, at some point in the conversation. I said that it's the way I am. I wouldn't want to be too aggressive, though. I don't want to "fight fire with fire."
I had a similar situation last year and my reply to that person was:
- Yes im quiet.. does it bother you?

And being assertive definitely helps self-esteem.
See just like in your case the other person is equally uncomfortable and just by acknowledging your own behavior you cut down the anxiety by 80%.
