Worst JOB Interview Experience

I really just wanted to share my interview experience that took place today & yesterday.

I recently went for an interview for a telemarketing job yesterday (to find out more about it) & was immediately offered the job at the end. I was shocked to have her offer me the job, somewhat excited, and really unsure about filling out documentation 'on the spot'. These were all of the apparent red flags.

1. the interviewer really pressured me to take the job on the spot, fill out forms, sign here, sign there, requiring my SIN.

2. During the interview I could tell this was the first time she was looking at my resume.

3. When I asked for a copy of everything I put my signature to, she told me no. (Even though I'm legally entitled to anything I've signed or a binding contract.) She asked me why I wanted a copy & said she didn't want their info leaked to a competitor. Some of the info was regarding the commission plan; If I were to ever get into a dispute about my pay, without that proof she isn't giving me the chance to defend myself. This is extremely shady and unfair. Does anyone else agree on this?

4. They wanted me to sign a contract, agreeing to charge me $50 out of my pocket for a headset. I've never been charged for office supplies like a desk, or a chair, computer or phone. There was another agreement I had to sign off on, that I would be watched at all times.

5. I don't have sales experience and if I didn't meet a quota, I'm more than sure they'd be happy to fire me. There were concerns about them not being able to guarantee work. The interviewer mentioned there were times they shut down early for the day if they didn't do so well.

6. During the interview she asked me why I didn't continue my education (college). I thought this was extremely inappropriate. This wasn't a requirement for the job and has nothing to do with how well I would perform at it.

SO...this takes me into today. I talked to my family ALL NIGHT about it, and every last concern and decided this is NOT the job for me. When I went in this morning (was supposed to start training), I had to tell them I had a change of heart. (*I didn't sign out all the forms by the way. Most of it was blank) Then came the bullsh*t. The first guy i spoke with tried to change my mind and tried to re-sell me on the job. He had me wait for the interviewer. I finally let the interviewer know, I don't think this is a right fit. She asks me why, and tells me 'Well, lets meet with the owner and see what he says. I want him to know I did my job'. She takes me downstairs, into a back office with the owner, closes the door. Again, I then let the owner know...I'm not interested. He basically laughed in my face, said that 'this' was the BEST job in town, what would I go on to do if I didn't take this? They would not let me LEAVE. I had to explain to him, it wasn't his business what I would do if I didn't take the job. I told him 'I'm sure there's more than enough people who've applied, & you'll find someone.' He was NOT listening, didn't treat me like a human being, wouldn't let me leave. I finally had to stand up and go out the door and he was STILL talking on my way out. This guy and the interview were f**king as%holes

I'm glad you didn't take the job. Sounds like some fly-by-night outfit and the questions were too inquisitive i believe. Buy your own equipment? Really? What a joke. I'm glad you seen it for what it was because it sounds rediculous. I've never had an experience like that but I've never had an office job either. You did good.

The job sounds well dodgy and the people complete wankers.

Wise move by you.

Yikes, that sounds horribly sketchy. Good for you for turning it down! Hope you find something better soon. :)

Did you contact Better Business Bureau and inform them of your experiences in detail? I would do that and leave a Yelp review including the names of all the people you interacted with, their address, phone number, everything you can do to expose them. $50 for a headset? Demanding you work for them? Predators.

I'm glad you didn't take the job. It sounds like a scam! Who demands their employee to pay out of pocket for equipment? One of the traps that job seekers fall into is coming off as desperate for a job, any job. Think of yourself as a business of 1 and the employer as a separate business. Would you do business with a company that looks really shady and dishonest? I wouldn't.

Thanks to everyone who replied. So on Better Business Bureau I can look up this company (which is embarrassingly a large company in the town I live in) and I can leave a review of my experience? I think I'll do that. I wouldn't want that to get traced back to me though. They have a copy of my signature.

I don't know if its such a good idea to release all the names & addresses of the people I met. I could get in serious trouble about that and could get tied back to me. I can't find this business on Better Business Bureau

How would they trace it back to you? Even if they did, they can't do anything. You didn't do anything wrong, they did. Their practices of preying on the weak/poor/uneducated to con people out of $50 for a headset (and bully them probably into further scams) are unethical.

Report them ASAP! They can't do nothing to you and the BBB surely has confidentiality rules so its a win win. They deserve it after the way you were treated.

^Well said.
I agree, definitely leave a review of your horrible experience with them. It will help prevent others from going through what you did.

Definitely report them. There's enough crappy employers in the world, we don't need another one.

I agree with Dottie, I think their practices should be reported. Save other people from falling into their trap.
