I played soccer for half a season, once.
My team had 2 girls on it-- including me; the rest were boys around the same age.
No one spoke to me in general; the only time I was acknowledged was when I had the ball.
One day after a game, the coach invited everyone to go somewhere for ice cream. The other girl on the team begged me to come so she wouldn't be the only girl there, so I agreed and mom gave e 2 dollars to get an ice cream. (which was a big deal)
We got to the park and everyone ordered ice cream but just as I was about to sit on the beach with mine in hand, someone shoved me from behind and it splatted into the sand.
I didn't make a big deal out of it, although I could't get another and everyone else around me was eating ice cream.
After ice cream, the team wanted to go up on the hill to play in the park; away from the parents and coach.
So, I went along because the other girl on the team asked me to.
Once on the hill and out of view of the adults, I was shoved onto the ground and kicked for what seemed like a good 5 minutes while they laughed and told me;
'They only let you play because every team needs at least one poor kid who plays for free.'
and continued with comments like;
'you might be good at soccer but you're hideous and probably not good at anything else.'
So, I stopped going to games and told mom I wasn't interested in trying sports anymore.
My team went on to win the district finals.
