What to say when...

If you're enough confident you can say just:,,what an awkward silence'':D Or: ,,what a rainy/good wether''.

Depends if it's someone you're feeling comfortable with or not.

I don't think you'd be self conscious of the awkward silence if you were comfortable with the other person (I probably won't), but if you do you can always joke about it.

If you're not comfortable with the other person (yet), I usually think of a few topics to present before I go to fall back on, but that's just preventing it and not reacting on it, I don't really know how to react on it myself.

Any good topic that springs to mind.

The problem with awkward silence is that you start panicking of what you have to say, making it impossible to think clearly and thus unable to find any topic at all, how trivial one may be. (well this is in my case though, not sure if it's the case for everyone else).

I also want to know what to do during an awkward silence or just any awkward moment. My mind draws a total blank!
