What is a "club"?

I think I kind of have a vague idea but I'm still not completely sure what people mean by "club" (as in "hey, let's go to the club").

Back in the days, I imagined "clubbing" to be something like this:

It does seem to be a lot more fun than normal people's idea of clubbing.

Means they're growing long hair and beards, dressing up like cavemen and beating people with homemade clubs while they communicate in a secret grunt language. I never understood it to be honest...

Heh! Okay, I think I'm starting to stir up a self-stereotype by answering this one, but let's see what I can say to help.

A club is a venue you usually have to pay to enter (almost always entry fee per event, not a year's membership). An assortment of DJs are booked to play, usually selected on account of the rough similarity of their music (ie., techno, funky house, R&B etc.)

Ish, although disco is actually a genre of music. A club might be referred to as a disco or by the long term, discotheque (in fact, StonedBob might tell you that's French for 'nightclub'), but the term is a little antiquated now. Better stick to 'club', really.
