Does anyone ever get really paranoid that they're using words incorrectly or have the wrong meaning? I'm starting to chat a lot online and am constantly looking things up in the dictionary because I'm scared that I might not have the meaning right. And these are words I already know, I just can't think of the exact definition in my head. Does anyone else have this problem? I feel like I've been doing it forever, but have started to notice it more now that I've been writing more. It's really annoying.

I think I'm pretty good with vocabulary myself- the meanings of individual words- but I also think that there are many slang phrases that I am clueless about- maybe with words I understand, but with a different meaning or one that goes over my head. I'm not into chatting, so I would probably seem pretty dumb if I started- maybe that's part of why I don't.

Some advice. Goes without saying that you can accept it or discard it. Cut down on chatting online and start interacting with real people. I used to chat online a lot and that time was nothing but a huge crater on my life. After years of doing that when I finally started to go out of the house and interact with real people, it felt like I had come out of a prison.

A prison it is, a self created one.

I do it when I don't remember how to properly spell a word or when I'm trying to look for synonyms (while writing, for instance.)

Everyone should do the same, because poor grammar is just sad. If I chat with someone with bad grammar, I just get annoyed.

Don't you think its better than not having a social life at all? I understand what you're saying, and I know that sometimes people replace an online life for their real one, but last year I was so bad that I wouldn't even go online and talk with people. I think the internet can be really good for people who have trouble talking, at least its something.

I understand where mndigi is coming from. I recently read an essay about younger generations and computers. Basically, or at least what I got out of it was that the generation thats grown up with online chatting is in general less social. Or at least those who choose so socialize online. Because you don't get that real life interaction socializing over the internet. There really no consequences or anything at all, you can say and do whatever you want and make yourself out to be as big as whatever. Where as in real life no such thing would really happen because your opened to being judged and evaluated by others. Therefore you develop less of a social skill in real life encounters. I believe this is part of my case. I took up internet gaming and chatting at a young age...since I was like seven. Any type of online chatting...especially typing is very easy for me to do as it's just what i'm used to...but in turn I didn't develop real life social skills very well. So I believe it can be a problem.
