So a girl came to sit opposite me at lunch...

i agree with this

No, it is over-analyzing. A girl sat next to him at lunch. I reckon she probably ate her lunch and was fine with that.

Some of the scenarios being elaborated here are the fabrication of the social phobic mind in my opinion.

It's hard to say why people do the things that they do. I had a girl sit by me at Starbucks recently. She asked if she minded if she sat there (in the comfy chair to my right; it's a common SB setup -- 2 comfy chairs near each other). I said, "No, not at all." Then she said that she got her dad the same shirt I was wearing. Sure, I thought up a thousand cool things to say, but only later. At the time all I could say was how I thought I got it. That shut her up but good. She spent the next hour reading and I didn't dare say a word.

I'm not sure why she even bothered to tell me that. Perhaps I shocked her with my blatant social stupidity? I could go round and round about it, but in the end, I decided that I'll never know why she asked me that and what effect I really had on her. So because I'll never know, I'm not gonna hate myself for not being suave. Maybe if I had tried to be smooth and humorous she'd think I was a creepazoid. *shrugs*

Other people are just as weird and unpredictable as we are.

Well there's not much you can do about that now so the best thing you can do is put it in the past and try to prepapre for your next encounter because you're gonna have another one. Might as well expect it. Maybe try a wave next time, and if you're really feeling up for it maybe a smile and "hey". Thats pretty tough even for me though.

Lol, the same thing happened to me today but at my lab session. This girl asks me some really obvious questions about a society I'm in and I just give these ridiculously straightforward and conversation-ending answers. *smacks self*
