Security Measures

Is anyone else uncomfortable with this sort of thing?

I work in a department store. Most days, one of the loss prevention officers waits by the door at the end of the night while we're leaving. If you have any sort of bag, like a backpack or whatever, they'll usually check what's inside. They never worried about purses or lunch bags. And it's not like they'll dig through your stuff, but they just want you to open it up so they can peek inside. This always sort of bothered me. I realize why they do it, but I've still never been comfortable with it. But I just kinda put up with it. Can't do much about it. I usually just took a tote bag if I had anything extra to carry, since I could just pop it open fast and be on my way. A few months ago, my supervisor mentioned that we were now supposed to get a "parcel check" tag attached to any extra bags on the way into the store. Previously these were only used for staff purchases, which had to be left at customer service and picked up on the way out. I never bothered doing any shopping before a shift because I thought it was too mush hassle dealing with these things. Anyway, at that point I quit bothering to bring a tote bag anymore. I just carried a lunch bag and if I happened to need a shirt to change into after, then I stuffed it in my purse. It seemed they never bothered with this anyway. I saw plenty of people in the break room without these parcel checks on their bags. I never once saw anybody get one, actually. So, today I noticed a note posted that said, "All bags may be subject to inspection by management or loss prevention - this now includes purses. They will not check zippered compartments." WTF?! I find this to be an invasion of privacy. I know they're not digging around, but still. I don't like having to show anybody what's in my purse. I'm a very private sort of person. I don't know if this is something regular people wouldn't be bothered by. Maybe it's just me. I actually felt a bit nauseous thinking about that for a while. I was dreading the end of the night. I was hoping that I'd happen to be following someone else out so I could see what happened first, just to feel a bit less awkward about it. Luckily it was one of the managers waiting at the door tonight. Usually they don't bother to check bags, so it was no big deal this time. Not looking forward to this in the future though. Trouble is, I can't even speak up and say I'm uncomfortable with it, for fear of looking suspicious. Just gonna hafta deal with it, I guess. Ugh.

On a related note, security cameras make me a little uneasy at times. Obviously, they serve a good purpose. They're important. But sometimes I just don't like feeling like I'm being watched. There's that attitude that if you don't have anything to hide, you don't have anything to worry about. While there is some truth to that, it isn't enough to make me feel comfortable with randomly being watched. I can be minding my own business and somebody could just zoom in, follow me on the camera and watch what I'm doing, just because I happen to be there. A little creepy, to be honest. I try not to think about it too much, but every now and then I can't help wondering this sort of thing and it kinda weirds me out.

It's a good thing I don't have much need to travel because airport security is just nuts. It has to be. It's just unfortunate for the majority of people. The law abiding citizens that have to take off their shoes, open up every bag, don't pack liquids and this and that. And even more so now with all these body scanners and pat downs that everybody hates. At least I know that's something a lot of people aren't comfortable with, not just people who have issues like I do. It's even more of a pain for me though, because I'm diabetic and have to travel with needles. Extra pain in the ass. But someone like myself is more likely to just avoid traveling if at all possible because all this security crap ends up taking the fun out it. It becomes more hassle than it's worth, sometimes.

Anybody else have any similar issues? Or am I just overreacting or too sensitive?

IMO the best idea for the bag searches is to turn it into a game. What you need to do is to strategically put an item near the top of the bag that will grab their attention. Wait a few days before using each of these objects. Some of these things could be:

- Condoms
- Adult Toys
- Adult Magazines / DVDs
- Icing sugar in a resealable plastic bag
- Empty bottle of an alcoholic substance

Then try to keep a straight face as you get your bag checked, and watch their reaction. They will either, say nothing and ignore it, laugh, or say something to you about it. You need to think up a clever reply if they happen to ask about it. This will also give you an idea as to the personality of the person that does the bag checks.

Yea well I been to Jail and Mental Hospitals and stuff so like I know all about getting searched even to the point where it feels like a violation but it's like I just don't even care now honestly I think it's not fair and I don't think your overreacting or being too sensitive because it's uncomfortable and unpleasing thing to be treated as if you should not be trusted. I really think that employees are supposed to be treated better than that though because seriously you haven't even don't anything wrong and stuff so that's really stupid.

I think security is only a pretense for getting people more and more under control, to get their personal data and monitor their privacy.

unfortunately, employee theft is a big problem

according to one survey of 25 large retailers in the US:

- 70,409 dishonest employees were apprehended in 2009, down 9.4% from 2008.
- Over $51 million was recovered from employee apprehensions in 2009, down 15.7% from 2008.
- On a per company basis, one in every 28.4 employees was apprehended for theft from their employer in 2009. (Based on over 2.9 million employees.)
- On a per case average, dishonest employees steal 6.6 times the amount stolen by shoplifters ($728.90 vs $110.14).

the store is just trying to save as much money as it can by stopping employees from stealing

if the store loses more money than it makes it can't stay in business

and then you don't have a job

For me it helps to just think of it in terms of what would I do if I owned that company?
If I owned it, I would not want to allow my employees to steel from the company.
Employee theft is a part of life. If you were the employer, you would want to protect what is yours too.

unfortunetly some jackasses have to ruin it all for the rest of us,they will also find some way to get past security and the tendency is to get tighter and tighter,I wouldnt blame them ,I would do the same thing, unless they are being abusive of course.

Regarding airline travel, I simply refuse to do it. If I can't get there by driving or train or by my own boat, oh well... I just don't go. And I do not believe airline security HAS to be that way. For one, Israel is faced with many more threats than we are and they don't deal with security that way. Statistically, you are more likely to die in a car accident on the way to the airport than on the plane, with or without the Gestapo security. Also, do you honestly believe that underwear bomber was for real? LOTS of people do not. Even an attorney who was ON the plane when it happened has investigated it thoroughly and believes it to be a false flag attack. He has a blog posting the evidence he found to support this. I agree with him! Screw the tyrants. I just won't fly. I also stopped crossing the US border for the same reason.

PS: You can read the attorney's blog who witnessed the underwear bombing here:

@Aussie_Lad: If I had the guts to do something like that, I don't think I'd be having these issues.

@coyote & BlueDays: I realize they're just trying to prevent theft but that still doesn't make me feel any better about it.

For the past two weeks I've been worrying about it any time I've had a closing shift. It's a non-issue if I work during the day. I don't like the anticipation. The end of the day comes around and I start worrying about what's gonna happen on the way out. Mostly I've been lucky and there's just been a supervisor watching the door and they don't care to check any bags. Even one of the LPOs just let us go without checking the other day. Today there was a new guy working, though, which made me even more weary. He was checking purses, but luckily I was following a few other women out, so I could observe beforehand. That's helpful when I'm not looking forward to doing something. I like to see how it's done first so I don't feel as awkward about it. I just opened my purse and he peeked in and that was it. Also, I recently noticed a few people who actually got parcel checks on their bags. Of course, I've seen others on their way in and out without them. I think it's partly the inconsistency and hypocrisy that bother me too. If they're gonna have these policies they should be regularly enforced and everyone needs to be made aware of them. It doesn't make sense that some people follow the rules, others don't, and then some probably don't even know the rules, and then nobody cares. But there's one LPO who's a total jackass and no one can stand him. I dread if I have to deal with him. He hasn't been around too long but I've heard plenty of stories of him being racist and going on power trips, intimidating the staff for absolutely no reason. Apparently some lady was shopping and had her purse sitting in her cart, open, with some plastic bags hanging out, and this guy just picked up her purse. He's undercover so the poor lady thought he was gonna steal it. Way to go. Management knows there's a problem though. I hope he gets fired if it hasn't happened already. I haven't seen him since that day.
