Saint John's wort

I went to the drug store the other day looking for some sort of herb that can lower my anxiety. And I'm super happy to say...I found one that works!! (for me, at least)

It's called "Saint John's Wort". I'm taking it in pill form once a day and I'm amazed at how much less anxious and nervous it has made me. I work at a pizza place and I found in the past that the littlest things would make me so stressed/anxious. But after taking three of these pills before each shift, I haven't felt the physical symptoms of anxiety at all! :D

Has anybody else tried this and did it work for you??

I've actually been trying that myself recently, usually only one day. I think it has had a mild effect on my anxiety, its still there but its not all consuming.

According to Wikipedia, the "most common adverse effects reported are gastrointestinal symptoms, dizziness, confusion, tiredness and sedation. St John's wort may rarely cause photosensitivity. This can lead to visual sensitivity to light and to sunburns in situations that would not normally cause them."

So it's pretty much what you'd expect after a big Friday night, anyway.

:D

I've actually started taking one pill a day, and my mood has lightened consiberably- I am far less anxious and depressed, which is amazing considering what's been going on in my life lately.

I wouldnt exceed anything than the recommended dose, I've not heard of herbal stuff having adverse effects with alcohol though

Does it take weeks to kick in or could you just take it whenever you are going into a stressful situation.

I heard of this when I first started noticing my anxiety issues and how much of a problem it was. Before I knew it was SA, I thought it was depression and my mom asked me if I wanted her to get some of this to try it. I didn't because it seemed real iffy that something could control anxiety/depressed moods. I also didn't really want to be taking something that would make me happy, I wanted the actual feeling of happiness the way it should be.

But maybe I'm just too picky.

Dylan Klebold (one of the two guys who was a part of the Columbine Massacre) took St. John's Wort.
I don't think it worked for him, lol.

A major depressive episode has multiple stages. At it's lowest the person is completely lethargic and without vigor. However, as one slowly starts to recover, there's a a period of time when the lethargy significantly decreases but the depressive mood is still there. This is when most suicides happen in depressive cases.

So, actually, St. John's Wort may have worked for him o_O

I've been taking it daily for the past year or so... slight improvement in mood (enough for me to notice and keep taking it at least) but it really has no effect on my social anxiety.

i used to take them.

i never really noticed a difference. and then soon after i went into a nervous breakdown.

I think it only helps for people who are mildly depressed/anxious. If you're severely depressed then it won't help much.

I may attempt to try it again in the future though

I have tried teas, tincture, pills of SJW and felt no effect. Same with passionflower.

I took abnormal psychology. They say that this particular herbal medication have very few effect. However, there's very little research on its effect on depression. My teacher did say it helps a little only.

I tried several brands of Hypericum ( St John's Wort).

There are brands, which when I took, I got restlessness, and agitations.

But only 1 brand that didn't cause that.

Later on I read on research papers about it, and found that, if only the flowering tops are used, it works like SSRIs, and with many more component
that binds to other different receptors, eg Apigenin is one component which binds to GABA-A receptor, which Benzodiazepines do. ( the different is in the subtype, and voltage channel).

So if the flowering tops is used, it works as antidepressant, with Hypericin and Hyperforin, which are the main components. Apigenin is another component, that calms you down.

But, if the product include the stalk, then, the stalk works like a MAOI.

So, we can imagine, taking a MAOI with an SSRI. It's going to give lots of side effects, and one of them is restlessness. Also stomach problem, etc.

Choose carefully when you buy St John Wort.

Make sure, only the flowering tops are used.

Best Regards,

I've been using SJW for about 5 days now, and I haven't noticed any difference in my mood. Although, the website says it takes about 6 weeks for the effects to really become concrete, so.....

I started taking like 6 of these a day (300mg each) and it's helping (but very minimally)
