Questions about the UK

I have been to many places like Italy and Mexico, but I have never been to the UK. And I have lots of questions about its culture and life. Mostly because i always assumed it was like the United States only with accents different than ours. but it is different

But I read about the UK and I wonder about things, and instead of reading them i find it easier to ask people, but i don't know anyone in the UK.

So here are sime thigns I wonder about the UK

What is Teletext, and how does it work?
What is television programming like, how much does the BBC dominate television and radio broadcasting?

Is the metric system widely used there?
How much is a gallon of gas?
How much is an average CD?
How racially diverse is it?
Does everyone go to private schools, with different forms and stuff?

feel free to answer or not. whatevs

oop well this sounds kinda fun so i'll give it ago.......ain't got much to do as you can see haha

um yeah the mystery which is teletext.....it's pretty much just set of pages that show news like sports weather etc....kinda like a regularly updated newspaper on your tele, hardly gets used anymore. Check how old it looks :p

BBC is still the most well known one i guess but with all the digital and cable stuff you can get now it's just a few channels amongst 700 others, if you get what i mean. It's much more dominant in radio.

Um sort of half and half really, we use miles, litres for fuel, i think but with pretty much everything else (weight, smaller distances) it's whatever you grew up with, we use both in other words.

I think it's about £1.15 a litre around here, it may of changed a bit as it's been a couple of weeks since i last filled up. That'll be £4.34 for a US gallon ($8.5)

Um like £8, not sure really (generally england = your getting ripped off)

Racial diversity, depends where you go i guess, it'll be way more diverse in bigger cities the further you get out i think the less you'll see of other races....kinda guessing at that one

We got private (fee paying school), public (more 'prestigious' fee paying school with the head master being a member of HMC, even more toffery) and state schools (run by the government, free to get in)...again it's kinda equal between all of them.....i went to a state one :D lol

It's all set in years, as in year 1 year 2 all the way up to 13 (sixth form), secondary schools have tutor groups and with primary schools it depends on the size, the one i went to just had 6 classes with each year in them.

Yeah hoped that helped!

I think many brits will moan about england and come off like they would prefer anywhere else, but truthfully we love it really if there were another ww we would still jump up to fight for the queen.

That picture of teletext is soooooooooooooo funny!
You wanna see it when the signal's scrambled, or when someone hacks in and puts swearwords into it (used to happen a lot more than it does now) - oh, and for the record, I don't have 700 channels, I have 4, lol. Yep, my aerial's so useless I can't even pick up channel 5

ooo terrestrial tv, tbh i probably watched way more tv when we had just the 4 channels but that was quite a while ago, i mean as a kid just moving images and random sounds was damn good entertainment. Especially when you wait till the channel goes to bed and it does that really loud booooooop noise with the fixed chunky colours.

Urgh.....good times haha

oh my

teletext is something you use over the age of i'd say 80! so kinda pointless!

The bbc dominates both alot, is it also the reason we pay for television licensing!? im not sure, it has no ad breaks which is amazing!

whats the metric system!? like miles instead of kilometres, and litres instead of gallons!?

i have no idea!

depends on where you get it, the cheapest is asda around £8 ($16) i just get them online from tesco, they're delivered from jersey or guernsey, some island off the coast of england!? then you dont have to pay tax, dont get me started on taxes! lols!

like someone else said depends on where your from!

i went to an independent school (lol at genericals toffery statement!) and i stayed untill the age of 18-year 13, but i didnt have to, only in six form schools can you stay on until that age, but you can leave at sixteen in all schools after you've sat your GCSE's, if your school isn't a sixth form college you then go onto college for 2 years, then university. Forms!? do you mean like tutor groups!?

If anything, the Polish have helped hold this messed up society together.

Really why? They take our jobs and don't speak English, whereas we have to have qualifications, etc to be even in with a chance..... Even The Sun is making a Polish edition, tht made me crack up...Gotta love the Polski though ;)

Most "English" people can't even speak English.

Don't insult your own people man 8O

Whilst I agree they take low paid jobs, I don't see how that is helping our so called "messed society"...

Elaborate please because you automatically call my opinion BS.

Your opinion is yours and i don't want to change it! It helps because if they didn't do it the economy would grind to a halt.

Britain doesn't have a people anymore. We are 'multi-cultural' remember? Polish people are closer to being 'British' than most people born here with a 'British' passport. 8)

Again your just stating an opinion rather than explaining why...Our economy survived quite well and i think its rather ignorant of you to presume it would fail without polish people. There is no denying that people from abroad have helped this county... taking on jobs in hospitals as doctors and nurses which we so needed ect But now english people who go university are struggling to get jobs because there taken.Plumbers builders... all the trades are suffering because polish and other imigrants are working for much less driving the prices down. Why would a company hire english people when they can hire imagrants who are willing to work for less that minimun wage :?

Alot arnt even on the books they get cash in hand which makes it even worse.ANd dont even get me started on housing... I was homeless from around 16... it took the goverment over 3 years to get me a flat and then it was in one of the worse areas of the town.Go visit youth hostels and the like and you will see what i mean...I think its sick that our countries kids are going without shelter yet people can come across from other countries and get a house fully furnished ect

This isnt a pop a foreighners.. they have helped this counrty alot filling gaps in certain industries which we really needed. But now there taking jobs and homes from english people.I just think we should look after our own first.I cand fault people who come over here to work because there only trying to make a better life for themselves and there fammily... im just annoyed at the goverment.

And about polish people speaking better english than english  Thats probaly because they have learnt it from a dictionary... theres proper english.. then theres real english which you can only learn... certain slang which comes from growing up in certain areas ect... its called culture.

I mean own people as in people who were born here :)

I'm pretty sure the economy wouldn't grind to a halt  We still have people like you to fill the gaps with your broad knowledge!

EDIT! - I agree entirely with Danfalc
