Psychiatrists- when is it time to find a new one?

Though I was lucky enough to be given a very good psychiatrist, I've been going through a very similar situation with the therapist I've been seeing for nearly two years now. She spends most of the time talking about herself & her own situations & beliefs & all of our appointments feel like wastes of my time. I've also been wanting to change therapists but have been afraid to because I was afraid of getting someone worse. However, I have a vocational specialist (she's been helping me look for suitable employment) that I really get along with who knows of the issues I have with my therapist & has recommended one that she knows to me, who she thinks will mesh better with my personality. So, within the next couple of months, I should finally have a therapist who may help me some.

Do you know anyone who may be able to recommend another psychiatrist? It does sound to me like you would be better off with a new one. If you know someone that you trust, & you tell them of your situation, they may be able to suggest one to you, like my vocational specialist did with me. If not, you could always try to research. A lot of doctors are listed on the internet, along with reviews. I gave my psychiatrist a review a while ago. You might be able to find a better one that way.

I hope you're able to find a new, & better, psychiatrist. Good luck :)

Have you tried going to a psychologist instead? Psychiatrists don't understand shit and they tend to throw meds at you like candies. Meds won't help much if you don't have a therapy. And this person sounds like he's minimizing your problems or not understanding enough, maybe it's time for a change.

Meds and therapy is usually the best combo.

You see, anxiety creates and reinforces patterns of thought in our brains that keep the anxiety going. The goal of therapy is to identify and change the patterns.

I see most psychiatrists as nothing more than legal drug dealers. Now dont get me wrong, I think medication is essential part of any treatment plan for an anxiety disorder.

I have seen 2 psychiatrists in my life and the first one was really quiet and generally sucked. The one I see now seems like he cares more but he is still not that good.

The common thread I have noticed with these psychiatrists is that they dont really know how to treat anxiety. Sure they know to try SSRI's and SNRI's and maybe some benzos but beyond that, they are not willing to try much else.

This is why I take responsibility myself and determine which medicines I want to try. For instance I have researched MAOI's and SA quite extensive and I suggested to my pdoc that I try one.

He told me they are not prescribed anymore and the newer drugs are better. I flat out told him he was wrong and produced scientific studies showing the superiority of MAOI to SSRI and he is now open to the idea. He even said he would research MAOI's for me.

The bottom line is that you must research any medicine prescribed because most doctors dont know shit aboot how to treat social anxiety.

This is a good resource to learn aboot what medications to research.... Drugs & Treatments - Revolution Health

It sounds like your just going around in circles with this one. How can he be helping you if he hardly asks how you are feeling or coping?!?
I personally have found the best help from a psychologist.

Psychiatrists just prescribe meds, not therapy in most cases. Psychologists and therapists give therapy.

yeah, I feel the same as u...she never even asked me questions about me when I got to her.. I feel like she;'s just taking me ass a number of SAers OCDers or whatever and judging me by them, like a procentage, not a person... and there is this other one.. but it is very complicated.. and it will be our fault if we don't...:(((((( I'm so lost....

I suggest you seek a new psychologist or psychiatrist. I see a psychologist and she is very calm and seems to care about things I have to say. The caring and calm factor is a big deal for me. I'd rather have someone who is more calm than an outgoing smiley maniac who makes jokes all the time. That was a lot like my first one. Anyway, my pyschologist's expertise is not only therapy, but also hypnosis. I find that hypnosis can help a lot of people. She can help people look at their past and let go of things so to speak. It may not come quickly, but it does work. It's very important that you go to someone who fits your personality and you think will help you out. Think of yourself first and not the person you are paying.

Try to find a middle aged psychiatrist. I find the ones who are too young dont know anything except what they read in a textbook and ones who are too old are too stuck in their ways and wont try anything modern or new.

Yup middle aged is best, I was lucky to get a consultant psychiatrist diagnosed me (SAD, OCD and PTSD) and passed me on to an amazing therapist (both middle aged), I'd had some teenybopper before that and got a second opinion (said I just had panic disorder, the GP had figured that out)
