preparing voice for public

You probably run into this problem like me. For example sometimes I don't go into work until late and don't talk to anyone all day before that. When I get to work I sound really low voiced, etc. Now before work I sing the abc's really loud to excercise my voice and it helped my voice at work a bit. That's all, hope it helps you too.

Good call.

I find my voice can become very strained, strangely, if I have not spoken for a few days. It's like not being in tune with everyone else who've spoken to people a lot during that time. Quite often people don't understand what I'm saying because it's too soft.

I will try to do more out loud reading to train the voice.

I talk to myself out loud every now and then to improve my verbal abilities. I also use skype echo test to see how my voice sounds before I speak with someone. I'm glad singing the abc's worked for you, but I wouldn't be brave enough to do that because I have a bad singing voice.
