Meeting others in a conversation...

For me it's a little bit of a mystery. How do you introduce yourself when at your school you want to join a group of people talking, where you know 1 or 2 people and some you don't know of them. Is it necessery to introduce yourself anyway or just talk to them if you really want to get to know them?
I am really curious of others' opinions/experiences.

I think its not usually necessary to be all formal and introduce yourself first. If you want to know them maybe you could just try engaging into what they're talking about and maybe introduce yourself later. Or maybe you can try talking to the people you know in the group and introduce yourself to the others.

In my experiences, the best way to introduce yourself to people is actually by contributing to a conversation or making some kind of joke to get them to laugh. The actual introduction of; "hey, I'm (name), by the way." can actually come quite awhile after in casual situations like these.

Young people especially seem to take well to the late introduction.
Some older people prefer to have a more formal introduction with a handshake and your name before jumping into deeper conversation.

It probably depends on the situation... takes some practice but if you have the guts to jump into a conversation with other people and can make them laugh or agree with you that tends to make a good impression.
