Med Suggestions

Hey everyone...Im new here and I thought Id ask for some help.

Ive had major anxiety issues for the last 10-12yrs or so (Im a 29yo male)....I havent been able to work or leave the house in almost 5 or 6 yrs.....ANYWAYS....Ive been diagnosed with G.A.D and panic disorder and hyperventilation syndrome (I think).....Ive been on the following: Effexor/Zoloft/Paxil/Prozac/Remeron/Buspar....ummm theres more...but basically A LOT of the SSRI's. I take Ativan when I have bad attacks. I think Im very med sensitive cuz I get a lot of side effects on anything I take...especially on effexor...the withdrawals and side effects on that were horrible. I truly believe that due to a lot of the issues on those SSRI's I am far worse off now than I woulda been if I had never been on them.

ANYWAYS...Ive been off long term meds for 2 or 3 yrs now...I felt a lot better being off meds but I havent gotten any better anxiety wise. I havent gotten any worse until I recently moved away from my "comfort zone"....I lived about 2 min from my parents place and in the same neighborhood I grew up in the last few years...but 2 months ago I moved about 15-20min away and my anxiety is going nuts....I WANT to stay there cuz I want to move on in life...but my anxiety is not liking it at all.

I know Ill probably never get rid of the panic attacks, but I want to try and minimize some of the general anxiety...Im anxious ALL the time...even in comfortable places now. I would like SOME relief, so Im thinking about trying a new med.

Now, with my history of issues with meds reason enough to not bother? or can anyone suggest something I havent tried that they think could be a decent fit?

Thanks for reading :)

Klonopin (generic clonazepam) is supposed to be good for anxiety. I'm on it, but my anxiety's very severe & I'm on the lowest dose possible (or so I think: 0.5 mgs), so it hasn't helped me as well as it's helped other's who've taken it. It has helped with some things though, like noises outside, etc.

well I take lorazepam for attacks and I feel like ass days after I take it.....Ive been on clonazepam before and it basically just made me feel drunk haha....Benzo's are definitely not a good long term drug from what I know.

and I dont really wanna take more SSRI's....Ive never had any success with them

All Benzos should act the same, they only differ in their time to start acting and their duration. If you felt drunk on Clonazepam, simply take a lower dose.

I agree with "Noca" about the dose. I've never felt much of anything after taking Clonazepam, though that could just be the low dose I take. I've also heard others say Celexa & Buspar (buspirone) are good, too. My mom's on Buspar & it works great for her depression, but I guess it's primarily used as an anti-anxiety med. I'm not sure whether they are benzo's or SSRI's, or whether they are one of each.

maybe try therapy instead? I found exposure therapy helped with agorophobia and panic disorder, I can function quite normally now and dont have a safety zone anymore.

Maybe see your doc and get referred?

lol Ive seen maybe 7 or 8 therapists over the years....Ive done the exposure therapy so many times Ive lost count....have yet to have success with it....even tried hypnotherapy...meditation....group therapy....etc....a couple years ago I just got fed up with the years of drugs and therapy with no success.....

I might try therapy again.....but therapists usually spout the same ole speech and "plans" that Ive tried a million times....

hmmmm do they still do lobotomies?!?!?! lol

Have you ever been on more than one medication at a time? If so, what combination?
Also, did the SSRIs decrease your anxiety at all, or did you just get bad side-effects without any benefit?

no benefit in the slightest with the SSRI's....

and the only combo Ive done is Prozac and Buspar....thats what I was on last and I was more anxious on it all than off it

the ONLY drug Ive ever taken that has helped me feel "better" is Ativan.....Ill take it....feel kinda weird/drunk feeling for an hour or two....then for 6-8hrs I feel almost normal! I can still have attacks like that but the general anxiety/on edge feeling is gone....then the next 3 days are usually ****ty and Ill be WAY more anxious (Im guessing withdrawal?)

To get withdrawal, you have to develop a dependence, which takes repeated, consistent use of a substance. Although, the chances of dependence on Ativan is fairly high, you would still have to take it everyday for a week or two straight at least. If you only take it rarely, then you wont get dependant.

And if SSRIs do not help you, then there are other types of drugs that are used to treat anxiety disorders. You ever try any Beta-blockers or anything like that?

sorry, I'm just relating my experience with them

You made a generalised statement, not a personal one.

This is no attack against ACT by the way, I am a Zen Buddhist, and we share a lot of the same psychological principles as ACT therapy.
