ive just joined a few dating sites- not for wanting a relationship- just to try and find some friends. i feel low about it but there you go. even if its just someone to chat to online . ive had a few smutty men msg me which has made me feel bit sick:: dunno if im doing the right thing.

(ive tried making friends on here but no one seems interested)

dunno how long i'll go with it,i keep thinking there must be someone out there that would like to make an effort and try and make friends....

I hope your perseverance pays dividends. Having men diversify your friendships seems like a near-impossible task. I'm not sure how many men think of just wanting a friendship, so you may want to steer clear of them. I'm not saying you are searching for friendships purely with men, but you did mention them.

I, too, have just joined a dating site - at the behest of a friend of mine. I am not sure how useful it will be in helping me with anything.

Is that how it works? I mean, I normally thought that dating sites are for those who really want.... I don't want to say get laid, but basically the next logical step if you don't want to pay for a prostitute, so all in all, I say that you probably wouldn't find many guys who just want to be "friends". But I could be wrong.

i tried that to. i joined a dating site to make friends & practice my conversation skills. i now know that it's not fair to the person that you are talking to:
people on dating sites expect a relationship, if they wanted just to talk to someone or make new friends they would have joind a regular chat room.....

if you are a girl it's even harder because you have to filter out all the creepy guys out there wich are about 80%-90% of the guys....

so basicly i dont think dating sits are the places to search for new friends....
but good luck to you anyway....

Yeah it's sad but true, the entire online dating scene is completely different if you are female. Tread carefully like everyone's said, the simple fact that you're a girl means a flood of pervy, desperate and genuine interest messages are headed your way. Mind what twiggle and the others said, it'd be in your best interest to state outright in your profile that you're only interested in making friends. Like ridicule said, most guys are on dating sites to either find dates a relationship or sex. Not just a friend. Consider maybe an activity group that interests you etc?

Dating sites can be very helpful. I'm on a couple.

I joined them at 22 years old never having been on a real date. A year and 1/2 later I've gone out with 10+ women from those sites alone.

It has helped my shyness/social anxiety a lot in terms of interacting with women.
