Is depression and social anxiety related to childhood experiences?

Are maltreatment, sexual abuse or emotional neglect in childhood risk factors for depression and anxiety disorders later in life? Do you have any similar knowledge?

For me, definitely.

I'm reading a self-help book on SA where it talks about biological and environmental factors playing a role in SA. The latter definitely has made me into the SA wreck that I am, I'm afraid.

I do not see a direct link between my childhood and my GAD and SA. I had a great childhood with a supportive family. I suffered no abuse of any kind. My mother was overprotective, but she has GAD, as did her mother, my sister, and sadly, now my 13-year-old son.

I would say if you have suffered childhood neglect or trauma, it would certainly put one at greater risk of having depression, an anxiety or personality disorder. In my case, I believe my biologic predisposition and my innate personality traits have been the biggest factors.

Now that I have children, I spend a great deal of thought concerning my parenting of each child. My 13-year-old has my personality-perfectionst, competitive, compares himself to others, etc... I have always encouraged him, supported him in every way, and never held him back from doing anything based on MY fears. My anxiety increased in my teens years, although I remember anxiety issues since the age of 6. He also suffers from hyperhidrosis, as do I, my mom, and my sister.

I honestly believe I have an overactive sympathetic nervous system. I also feel there are imbalances of certain chemicals in my brain.

Brain studies have been done with people suffering from SAD. In social siuations, SAD sufferers' brains had increased bloodflow to the area of the brain that is associated with fear.

The bottom line is I have to find a way to live the best I can each day with these disorders.
