Seriously, i have the most annoying anxiety symptom in the world, been battling it for about a year, and no matter how many forums i post on, people either don't bother to reply, or are completely clueless. I barely understand it myself... I feel as though I can't use my mouth... I'll explain it as best as I can, i honestly doubt anyone will have any clue what im talking about...

alright, so im saying "hey whatsup", when i start to say it, both sides of my upper lip have a tense uncomfortable feeling, the more I do it, the more tense and more uncomfortable it gets, its almost as if my muscles are tensing to prevent themselves from moving a certain way, If any one has any info on what this sounds like, or anything that could possibly help, please do post.

THANKS.

hi torturedsoul. I don't know what it would be like to have anxiety in that way but it sounds really rough. I'm learning that anxiety manifests itself in all sorts of psychological and physiological ways. Don't give up.

I agree with SilentBird anxiety manifests in all kinds of physiological ways,or it could be something else, either way I think it will be better if you consult a specialist.

I've had it myself a lot of times. It seems that is got a lot less over the years. I believe it is just a symptom of the anxiety, and not really a medical issue. The only times I still have it is when I have to repeat myself and get nervous.

What seems to help is to try and practice a lot times when you are alone and not under stress. The muscles need to learn how to do it correctly. One day when I am rich I am going for speaking lessons at a drama teacher, just to learn how to use my voice right.

I used to get a twitching upper lip on occasion (i could feel it tense-up a bit, and then sometimes would start twitching). Mainly i think from memory it was in group situations (eg school assembly), as that was where i was most "at stress".
I dunno if that's the same as what you have?

I think I can understand. Do you have anxiety, fear or insecurities around people? That could be contributing to your muscle tension, and if you have a tendency towards OCD, then it could be making it a self fulfilling prophecy in that the more you think about your mouth, your muscle, about please let it not happen, the more it tends to happen. I have the same problem regarding a muscle twitch in my neck or head. It's the same as blushing when you are trying not to blush, and the more it plays in your head, the more prevalent the problem becomes.

Can you say that infront of a mirror, and can you do so do yourself alone?

Wow thank you guys for your input, I have never received so much help before :) i guess the best thing I can do is schedule an appointment with a psychologist, for now I will continue trying to figure out how to use my mouth muscles :3 as weird as that sounds. funny thing is I can talk normal when i don't think about it, but since im ocd as well, I always tend to focus on it when I talk, im trying my best to figure out how to move my muscles in a way that doesn't trigger the tension and keep my focus outside. any further input is welcome :) THANKS!

*edit*
And no, i cannot do it infront of a mirror even, it gets worse around people... i guess because i focus on it more.

Hi TorturedSoul,

Welcome to SPW. :)

That you feel a lot from your anxiety is totally normal around here, we all know where you are coming from and I think like Waybulloo says you might have a form of OCD, that you worry too much about facial tension. Is it, that you are too afraid of people looking at you, so your mouth shakes, or get tensed? I have it with my eyes, I look like O_O when someone stares at me and get extremely uncomfortable, I'm sorry you must experience this, it's a hard journey, but a higher self esteem would help much and maybe get to know why your body reacts like that and how you can stop those triggers and your thinking about it and before it and after it. Yeah, cycle.. Let's get out of that cycle hey!! ;) Have a good time here :)

Hey guys, just following back up with everyone, I didn't ever see a psychologist because I am determined to get rid of this by myself or with the help of some meds, I have my doubts about how effective a psychologist can be since my last one didn't help whatsoever and wasted alot of money...

Since I have been forcing myself to be alot more social, talking to alot of different girls, and skyping with friends, it has helped alot, but the anxiety still remains and 90% of the time my mind gets stuck on it. The only time it goes away is if im having a good time around people, which is about 50/50.

I noticed when I feel like my lip is being watched it quivers uncontrollably, I bite my tounge to stop it which usually helps, but the TENSION is just unbearable.. I MEAN REALLY! i just want to rip my lips plum off my face lol. If it stays for to long it gets for painful and uncomfortable. The only way it stops is if I can sit down and hold my face up with my hand and rub slightly, because it would be completely wierd otherwise lol.

Is there any medication that can SHUT DOWN muscle tension, or atleast minimize it so I can stand the feeling. idk what to do guys :(
